Hugo's Howlers

I think it's 3 out of 6 so 50%. I would say if your keeper saves 1 in 2 pens it could make a difference.

I'd say if we scored 3 more goals it would make a difference. However, we let in 10 more goals in the PL this season over the previous season.

Our overall defence is responsible for that.

Hugo in the top 10 in the league for pen save percentage as of January. Also read Petr Cech has failed to save 15 pens in a row... It really isn't a marker to judge a keeper by IMO as a team shouldn't be giving them away anyway and it really depends who is taking them.

Look at Le Tissier. He missed one pen out of 49. Does that mean all the keepers he ever scored them against were shit?

It all adds up. Poor at pens, poor at distribution, poor at near post, poor close in tending to fall backwards. So is it the old shot stopper nugget ? He is a good shot stopper ? Not at his near post he ain't. He gets down quickly , I will give him that and he is fast coming out. I'm not judging Hugo on pens alone, it's just one aspect. If a final is decided on pens due to a stale mate.....god help us. Then it will make a difference.

For me, he's not poor at distribution. 90% of the time it is great but sometimes he over elaborates and instead of knocking it long overplays it. It can get us into trouble but barely does. I've wanted him to make that slight adjustment for a while now as it scares the bejesus out of all of us when he does it.

What he does do better than any keeper in the Prem except for maybe Edersen is save loads with his feet when other keepers try and use their hands. He has a natural instinct to go with his feet when he knows he won't be quick enough with his hands. That is a talent you rarely see in a keeper and can't teach. He's saved loads of goals over the years doing that.

He's also a fantastic puncher of the ball and we rarely get in trouble when he chooses that option. He also knows naturally which hand to lead with when stretching in a full length dive.

All in all, if the mistakes continue, there will be more and more questions asked of him this season. He's gone from a top 5 in the world keeper to perhaps now not in the top 10. He's still worthy of the Spurs shirt though but I'd like him to iron out the mistakes. I'd also like us to start acknowledging the root cause of some of these goals like Son switching off and letting Rudiger run 50 yards in a straight line before the offload which led to the Hugo howler. Funny that nobody mentions Son's part in it but jump all over Hugo.

we'll agree to disagree on his overall quality - it's harder to argue my corner directly after his worst season. Hopefully next season some of your criticisms will be silenced...

Doubt he'll fix his distribution though. That does my nut in.

Agreed. Definitely several keepers who have had much better seasons than he's had but that wasn't the case prior to this season IMO... A couple years back he was in the debate with De Gea as best in division.

Jan failed to clear adequately and it directly lead to a goal against Belgium in their world cup warm up. Going to start a thread NRD? :eek!:

Not sure how you can call not saving a penalty a howler in any sense of its meaning . No goalkeeper should ever save a penalty . It's only a mistake by the penalty taker if he fails to score.Being classed as a specialist penalty saver is ridiculous . Being classed as a spectacular penalty misser is well recorded . The example of le Tissier is a classic .

I might have contributed on this thread , really can't remember , but Hugo was way up there last season in the clean sheet league . I would bet Harry made more howlers than anyone in our team last season . Hugo's are just more obvious and highlighted .
But I do hope he realises that he can't play football like an outfield player . I have never seen anyone who gets into such a tangle trying to control the ball and play with his feet. It's comical at times and very worrying at others . The chip over the forward to our wing backs leaves a lot to be desired . Distribution with hands or kicks 'from' his hands is great . At the tail end of the season ,he pulled off many absolute brilliant saves when we were going Gung Ho for those elusive points to qualify for CL ....Newcastle is a prime example .

Can we get better though, that is the question?

RD - that is exactly the question. Liverpool have apparently bid £57m to Roma for Allison. Roma want £80m. Do we want to be getting into that sort of nonsense when we have a keeper that will hopefully right his couple of minor wrongs.

The only way Spurs replace Lloris is by nurturing a youngster who will eventually replace him. I don't see that happening with Spurs poor track record with young keepers.

IIRC Hugo is at the top of the GK mistakes that led to goals list in the PL. it’s either 5 or 6. Just for balance.

Just checked. 5. Same as Begovic. One behind Cech. As said this was his worst season. Also our style of play (playing out from the back, high line & etc) means he's more likely to make those errors.

If he continues this form next season we need to replace him but it won't be easy, and he has it in him to get back to previous form.

In which case we need to sign a top keeper. Vorm is getting old and only given one year contract and Gazza written off after one game.

He is approaching 27 and he hasn't played more than 24 games in the premier league in 6 seasons. I have seen him at the saints, he makes terrible decisions. Makes the odd good save, which any pro keeper will make.

I think we are set with the current 3 for another season. Next summer we will be looking I think.

I feel like we need to let Gazza go and bring in a homegrown keeper, preferably a younger one. That way we can create space for a non-homegrown player outfield.
