Clapping

We were clapping (on duty) and rather nicely, a passing ambulance stopped and the crew came over to thank us. (Obviously not on way to an emergency)

Wtf. Why?
Patronising. Look after them instead.
(Ducks for cover)

I’ve only just caught up with some of these threads...

I’ve just said the same to my wife. It seems like a really insincere gesture and I find it really patronising.

Earlier today, I was out putting the Porsche on a trickle charge when I heard people in my street clapping and banging drums ffs. Rather than going out of the garage and clapping along with my neighbours, I hid out of embarrassment for the key workers.

The work that the NHS does and other key workers is amazing but seriously - what is this bullshit clapping thing?

Thank you.
I was wrecked by some on this board for being a miserable old git. Clapping is easy and costless. Some really nice, genuine people will have done it. Others are hypocritical sh#ts.

Let's see how much people value our key workers, say, 3 years from now. I sincerely hope I'm wrong in suspecting we will go back to "normal".

Just been out clapping on Lower Rainham Road. Full turnout on our section and there are a couple of seriously vulnerable ones. I felt at one with my tory neighbours for a few minutes. It may be to show appreciation for the NHS but I think it does good for the clappers too.
What will your Tory neighbours ask of the government they support in the years to come when it comes to supporting these workers?

Thank you.

I think we can all agree you're a miserable old git without taking a position on the wider question you raised. Personally, I find clapping in public on occasions such as this neither easy nor costless, but rather utterly inconsistent with my dignity and sense of self worth.

Maybe holding up a poster with a variant of the old Socialist Worker slogan, "Clap-but with no illusions" as one clapped would work, but of course, that raises a whole new set of practical issues.

Good. People simply do not believe me that putting an EV on a regular trickle charge to top up overnight is enough for most motoring. Yes, it would take from here to eternity to obtain a full charge on the car off the ordinary mains, but typically the 30-40 miles obtained overnight gets the job done.

You’d have been proud of me guys
There was a good turnout in our street for the NHS clapping and somehow, it all seemed to get in time, so I threw in a ‘ Hessenthalers Barmy Army’
My missus looked at me like I was fucking mental, but I knew it would mean a lot to you guys 👍😁👍

No, she was right!

Thank you.

Taking this position doesn’t make you a ‘miserable old git’. It makes you principled.

I respect the right of people to participate in a government orchestrated gesture that won’t address any of the practical problems that key workers are faced with.

But, for me, it is a new type of propaganda to distract from the real issues.

While a bit galling to see smug Tory voters (and Johnson himself) clapping our NHS workers I think it’s better to focus on the positives.
Perhaps the tories will realise the importance of the NHS to our economy. Perhaps a few of those people clapping might start putting two and two together and use their vote more wisely in future.
Clutching at straws perhaps but for me there really is no down side to a bit of clapping.

Thank you.

As a "key worker" have I got to wait 3 years for you to pop the cheque in the post?:fish:

I'd vote for it now but your lot are in charge. Both my key worker children (adults) will have to wait, along with you, sadly.

I should have said 5 years.

Nice attempt at a tease btw. :-)

It wasn't "government orchestrated" ffs
