Takeover

Hi all not posted for ages on here but kept up to date with all the classic Wigan disgruntlement. Through what we know so far (I’ve tried to digest as many of the documents as possible) has anybody worked out what IEC gain from purchasing us?

I just can’t see them making any money. We have a few players that are worth a few bob and if the plan is to sell these on and bring in cheaper players then sell them on I can’t see us getting promoted without major luck. If we don’t get promoted then they will consistently lose money and suddenly they’ll be left with a club worth next to nowt.

Are they looking to gain exposure for the brand? Wouldn’t they have just sponsored a shirt if so? The potential as a money making club if very limited and a few summer concerts isn’t going to put that right.

I just have a feeling that we’re not being told something major. And I don’t know if it will be good or bad. I think there’s a richer individual who wants a toy involved. It just doesn’t make sense that a business would want to put us on the books.

My thoughts - would they be looking at casinos and hotels to go with it.? There’s a lot of money to be made from casinos. Wigan isn’t too far off from Manchester, Liverpool etc and properties/land prices are lower. Excellent rail services from the south. Wouldn’t owning a local football club give them a good avenue to get there?

Somehow cant see anyone building a casino in Wigan, there are already three in travelling distance that I am aware of at Southport, Liverpool and Manchester. Surely if that was the plan they would have chosen a site with less competition. The hotel idea could be possible but surely not a luxury hotel, more of a Travelodge I would think.

My own thoughts are that they are looking to the future and plan to invest slowly and improve the academy with the ultimate aim to get the club into the premiership were they would have a chance to sell on at a huge profit. £20 million is small change to pay for a championship club along with all the facilities and land, a modest investment of say £50k to get us promoted and they could probably sell us on at 150k as a premiership club. Remember we were only in league 1 when all this started so the price agreed then has probably risen already.

The hotels and casinos are also their primary business so it would make sense. Apparently even Bolton make good money from their hotel so could be a good idea for us.

In that case KDZ why did they not buy Bolton instead. Would have made better sense than buying us and given Boltons woes at present I am sure they would have been welcomed with open arms.

Actually having just read their annual accounts the hotel does not make good money it actually turned a meagre profit last year. The mainstay of the business was the corporate entertainment which has suffered badly due to their on field performances and according to the financial statement "some onerous decisions" by previous management tying them to lower contracts.

To me it just makes no sense unless there’s someone very rich behind it who wants to chuck some money about. I understand the “if we get into the premier league” reason and I like the sounds about investing in youth. But let’s face it, there’s probably 20 other clubs who have bigger fan bases, more money and who also have the exact same plan. And if we don’t have a trip to the premier league (which is most likely) it’s a loss year after year. How long would a business that needs to make money for its shareholders put up with that?

I’m confused by the whole thing as currently it doesn’t add up.

Everyone is confused, but until the takeover is fully announced we will not know the ins and outs of it all.
Their full intentions may never become public knowledge, but I am hoping for a statement at least from the new owners soon which will put the fans minds at rest.
This has become one mother fucker of a saga, and if it was just a straightforward buy out it would have been settled yonks back. I for one think there is more to it than we all think, and a major investor is involved or going to be involved somewhere down the line.

"Wigan boss Paul Cook has recommended Brass for the role and is happy to work alongside him in a new-look management structure at the Championshipclub. "

sounds like cooks heer for the long run. he oviously nows something we all dont. The only wey to make money on are club is to get us in the prem. all this guff about casinos is a smokescreen. its big doe in the greed legue now and like somebody sed before. mite of been tb actualy. buy us for 20mil. invest 50mil. get promoted. sell for 150mil as a going concern. win win.

Brass had a terrible managerial career - hope he is better at spotting players than he is coaching them!

I was thinking Joe Royle was going to be doing that role.

Definitely a Cook led appointment, they were teammates at Burnley.

More bad news for David Sharpe, the odds on him staying are widening by the day.

Joe Royle is too old for that sort of position while his son is more involved in youth development.

Our recruitment is very patchy with some real gems and others who barely kick a ball.

This smacks of jobs for the boys and as the new owners know nothing about football maybe they are being mugged off by our growing band of scouse senior management team ! Never heard of this Brass guy and if all he has is Bury on the CV how is that going to encourage bright young talent to Latics ?
Would have thought Peter Reid would be better suited tbh

I guess we have no brass if we're turning to this guy. To be honest I've never heard of him and strikes me as a job for one of the boys. That said it's important Cook has a good relationship with whomever it is, though his lack of profile in the game may be an issue. To be honest it's probably a role we need, time after time in recent seasons we've failed to assemble a balanced squad and it's surprising how many we sign who rarely play and then are gone in the next window.

As you said, you know nothing about him and so can't make a judgement. Give him a chance before you write him off.
People thinking that Peter Reid or Joe Royle would be taking on full time day to day running jobs like DoF at their age are being fanciful, why would they when they can have a much easier life as advisors
