People claimed the EU Commisioners are 'unelected' and therefore the EU is 'undemocratic', a widely held view/lie during the Brexit referendum.

The Commissioners are elected by the MEP's, hence through a democratic vote.

Cabinet members are not directly elected either. So basically, the EU is no less democratic than us. In fact perhaps more democratic as they don't have a second chamber with unelected political appointees and people chosen for their religious views (I think only Iran has the latter).

Now who is "lying" about the EU ?

Commissioners are not "elected by MEPs through a democratic vote".

Each Member State nominates a Commissioner.

Each presents him/herself to a Select Committee for that Portolio.

A Committee may make a negative report - but it is up to the Nominee to withdraw or not.
 
Good riddance to a grotesque, fetid and gross abomination of person; I hope and pray she never gets anywhere near as much power ever again.

No idea how safe her seat is but oh how I wish for her to have a 'Portillo moment' some time in the next thirteen months. The champagne is on ice...

Well, considering Call Me Dave led the remain campaign, the red wall seats will all now be a returning gift for Starmer.

As if he needs to get his number of seats up any further.

Starmer now just needs to not do anything, not say anything, and wait for the self destruction of the Tories to be complete.

Depressing for me as I wanted him not to have an overall majority, prompting a coalition to at least provide a hint of Socialism.
