Saving Money & Tips

I've stopped the auto renewals of my virus package, first step towards saving some money!

Hi J, for most everyday users who don't look at porn, illegally download films, or visit the dark web, the free Microsoft antivirus that is bundled with Windows 10 is fine. Your internet provider may give you an antivirus program, BT give away McAfee. Never keep the auto renewal option on as they will always screw you. You can buy Norton ever year from Amazon for £20.

Fulford there are no programs that will speed up a PC, you could get someone to replace your existing harddrive with a solid state harddrive and that will give real performance improvements.

Thanks Wurzel, might revert back to just using the Windows one, didn't realise it was good enough !

Appreciate the advice folks, all about boxing clever financially in 2020!

I've already got SSD

I pay for AVG though the free version does enough if you dont need tons of security. I also have tune up and driver update. I do a free month of AVAST and then cancel it when I go abroad.

Does anyone know of a good free program for speeding up a computer. Most I've seen are free scans but you have to pay to use them.

It depends on how old your computer is. It's probably best to delete any unused software off it, then run Ccleaner and see if that helps. If it's more than 4 years old, it's time to get a new one.

It's not that old but I've stopped using it as it's so slow. This laptop I'm using now has an i7 processor and a ssd.

Is there a new version of CCleaner that's compatible with Windows 10?

I used to use it the whole time, but as soon as Windows 10 came along and ruined everything, I couldn't run CCleaner anymore.

With old computers that have gone slow I’ve just saved the files in need and reinstall windows from scratch.

Can you upgrade the RAM too? I’m not a computer geek but doing that would be the best bet I think.

No joke, that was one of the first things I was taught in college studying computers and networks.
