Planning for end of season

Looks like the PL is going to hit the jackpot again; Amazon's PL experiment was such a huge success that even after it was all over, it still retained a 35% uplift in accounts.

That is it's biggest platform sign-up success in one quarter - ever.

They're now desperate for more. The PL will be rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of it.

The season must be cancelled. To continue no matter what the measures would be not only innappropriate but also highly irresponsible.

It seems that this proposal is on the table for the PL on friday; I will be greatly surprised if they take it. The one thing I do know for certain if that decision is made on Friday, it won't be unanimous.

Sure they will. Just interesting they called season off when financial impact seems pretty big on doing so even without the insane PL level TV money

Yes. It it will be interesting to see what agreement is made between Comcast and the PL.

Intriguing. Did some quick research.

So in the previous contract Sky paid £11m per game. In the current contract they pay £9.3m per game for 128 games (£1.2b). BT were paying £7.6b and moved up to £9.2b for 32 games (£0.3b). So the PL let the price per game converge between the 2 companies and didn't allow any overlapping of games. £1.5b to cover 36 of the 38 fixtures at about £42m per week.

Then Amazon come along after the Sky / BT deals were done and won the last 2 fixtures. In December they showed all 10 games over 2 days but with some games starting at the half time interval of the first. They paid £1.5m per game. Rinse repeat on the Boxing Day fixtures. We got those Amazon games as part of our £79 a year, the cost of Amazon Prime whilst they took their 15m prime members up by 35% to over 20m. So for their 2 rounds of fixtures they paid £15m per week.

It feels like the PL are playing with fire especially with the impact of Sky and BT Sport subscriptions because of the pandemic and people using Amazon Prime more than ever for deliveries.

Can't wait for the next round of negotiations. Be more entertaining than most of the televised games :-)

When so much is at stake, then anything is possible.

Spoken with someone who will be there today, he's of a mind that they will wait until they have a clear lead on things from Government and the probable ending of the blanket lockdown - he says the general feeling is they could finish the league in July and restart the new one early September.

So today looks like another deferral of the situation as the Player Union also seems dead set against a restart this season.

Club captains in the EFL's told to tell teammates that there is a strong possibility of not finishing the season.

EFL have worked out to do so would require 66,000 blood tests on players and staff to even have a chance of finishing the season.

That cover's all the leagues?

Sky's Q1 revenue drops due to coronavirus pandemic: Analyst expects value of Premier League’s next broadcasting deal to decline materially

Sky's results raise uncertainty on Sky's ability to commit to high-value deals in the sports sector, which could influence the coming tender process for the Premier League's next rights cycle.
An analyst from Pivotal Research Group expects the fee for the Premier League’s next broadcasting cycle to drop unless a large internet bidder emerges.

The coronavirus pandemic could push back the negotiation of the next agreement.

The decrease was primarily due to lower direct-to-consumer, advertising and content revenue.
The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in lower sports subscription revenues for the company, part of US firm Comcast.

The value of the Premier League’s next broadcasting deal is likely to drop materially, an analyst told offthepitch.com, after Sky on Thursday US time revealed its revenue fell by 5.8 per cent to $4.5 billion in the first quarter of 2020, primarily due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on its operations.

Premier League confirm plan to finish season should government restrictions allow

Premier League clubs underlined their commitment to complete the season as the "first tentative" steps towards a restart were discussed on Friday.

After the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport hosted the first of regular discussions with medical chiefs over the future of sport as a whole , the Premier League confirmed next steps were being discused.

English football's top flight is seen as the benchmark, with 92 matches still to complete the 2019-20 season.

Clubs on Friday morning were presented with details of ‘Project Restart’, including the viability of resuming matches on June 8 - and the healthy challenges that pose - and a number of possible rule changes, including completing fixtures at neutral venues.

Many clubs — including relegation-threatened Brighton — are understood to be fiercely opposed to squandering home advantage and completing the campaign at “approved”, neutral venues.

The Premier League proposals being discussed today at Project Restart

However, a statement following the meeting confirmed the plans were not considered impractical by Premier League clubs.

A statement read: "The League and clubs are considering the first tentative moves forward and will only return to training and playing with Government guidance, under expert medical advice and after consultation with players and managers.

"The League welcomed the creation of the Government medical working group for a return of elite sport, which met for the first time this morning. No decisions were taken at today’s Shareholders’ meeting and clubs exchanged views on the information provided regarding "Project Restart".

"It was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted. The clubs reconfirmed their commitment to finishing the 2019/20 season, maintaining integrity of the competition and welcomed the Government’s support."

The Premier League hope to have a return to full contact training on May 18 and presented a hygiene protocol for training grounds in the morning. It includes players covering their faces at all times, arriving and leaving in training kit, a ban on massages and all cars to be parked three spaces apart.

A particularly contentious factor is the issue of testing players for Covid-19 and the regularity of those tests, which will be paid for by the Premier League and other governing bodies in their respective sports.

As many as 100,000 testing kits could be required across English football’s top four leagues to ensure the season can safely finish, with the Premier League planning to test players for the first time on May 9-10 ahead of the mooted return to training.

If the PL does get re started , the break will be like the one in between seasons. Normally pre season warm up games are played to sharpen and condition the players. So what if anything can be done to replicate this.

Serie A clubs vote to complete season

Serie A, which had been played behind closed doors before the suspension of football, is hoping to resume games on June 13

Serie A clubs have unanimously agreed to complete the season despite Italy’s sports minister claiming the chances of a restart were “increasingly narrow”.
A video conference call with all 20 top-flight clubs was held yesterday following sports minister Vincezo Spadafora’s comments, with Serie A president Paulo Dal Pino announcing the outcome.
Dal Pino stressed his “openness to a dialogue with the government from a constructive and collaborative perspective, obtaining on this position the full agreement of all the clubs.”
Serie A clubs have repeatedly insisted they want the season to be finished, and aim for a return to training on May 18 and games restarting on June 13. The season was suspended on March 9 after the outbreak of coronavirus in Italy, the worst hit country in Europe with almost 28,000 deaths.

The French government cancelled the 2019-20 sporting season earlier in the week and the Ligue 1 season was finished early despite hopes to resume on June 17. Spain’s La Liga, the German Bundesliga, English Premier League and Serie A are all aiming to restart.

Spadafora said on Wednesday that a return to training for Italian clubs did not necessarily mean the league season would continue and that he believed the likelihood of that was decreasing.
But Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation, has said it would be “the death of Italian football” and that he would “never sign for the end of the championships”. He says the estimated cost of cancelling the season would be up to £700 million.

If they go back with no crowd the games will be like pre season games. Nobody will take it seriously.

The greedy feckers just have to take the hit like everyone else.

Rumour going around about a single venue finish to the league.

It's not about greed it's about survival.
