Ex-Imps Discussion Thread

Perhaps a sad indictment of the state of English football, but it looks as though the likes of Rotherham have accepted their fate as a side that is strong for League One, but struggles to compete in the Championship. Rather than ‘live the dream’ and chase being competitive in the Championship, they are bouncing between the two divisions. Makes them financially secure.

And I'd take that - always some interest, be it promotion or relegation battles. And the opportunity to see "bigger" teams and stadiums that have been in Premiership eg Stoke, Wednesday, Birmingham, Forest, Derby rather than just the likes of Accrington, Fleetwood, Rochdale

I Think it's a good strategy, the alternative is 'living the dream' and quite possibly ending up in massive financial trouble....i'd say that is the sad indictment.

Yep, that's what I was saying a few weeks ago about us as well. Club's of our size are better off taking the money, running with a L1-ish kinda budget and then make sure you can compete the next season in L1, whenever that is. Rinse, repeat.

Mind you, Rotherham still found a way to pay an average weekly wage of £7k in the Championship!

Absolutely! I certainly wouldn’t advocate playing the casino that is the Championship.

Richard Walton has moved from Tamworth to fellow Southern League Premier Division Central side AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

Just shows, if you have enough lessons it will eventually sink in!

Burton Albion have some serious financial problems due to being in the Championship. Their annual accounts for the 2018-19 financial year were published at the start of this month, and reveal a loss of £1.2 million. That is despite a run to the semi-finals of the League Cup. Whichever way you look at it, that is a crushing amount of money for a side with an average home support of barely 2,000. Chairman Ben Robinson put in £400,000 of his own money just to keep the club going, and Nigel Clough and his management team have recently been replaced by centre-half Jake Buxton. Given their almost permanent financial worries in recent years, Wycombe would do very well to heed the Burton Albion experience and approach the next year realistically.

The bouncing between Championship and L1 is fine until you consider the tale of Yeovil who enjoyed one season in the second tier not so long back and will be playing Kings Lynn in a league game next season.
It can go horribly wrong

Norwich basically did the same thing going up to the Prem... spent almost nothing. Probably pleased they did that based on the pandemic.

Burnley are another who initially yo-yo'd but chose to invest off the field with their PL money initially and retained good Championship players in the PL and were pretty much ready made to come back up.

Even now, they're still working in a similar way. Dyche is doing a remarkable job there.

There was actually an interesting piece along similar lines the other day, focused on the likes of Bournemouth, Stoke etc who get into the PL, and eventually got to the point where they almost get bored with being 10th-15th and start trying to be something they're weren't in terms of recruitment, spending above what they'd normally do etc. and it backfired.

Burnley are doing the opposite (Palace are similar) by just being what they are, accepting that they can't suddenly become a top 8 side every season and keep their work on and off the pitch consistent to what got them in the PL in the first place.

Ironically Stoke were having sell out crowds and needed to expand capacity, and the obvious plan was to "fill in" an open corner of the stadium. That work was put off until they were "established" in the Premiership, and it was built and completed in 2017. The following season they were relegated

Along with Grant Smith, Adi Yussuf, and Tom Champion in the Borehamwood 20.
See Halifax have Dale Southwell in their squad

Although it's a lottery I feel the revised play-off arrangements will favour the winners of the 1st round ties. Although they will then travel to a team who finished higher, no fans nor recent competitive match must be hugely beneficial in a one match chance to be in the final.

I agree- this was clear in the restarts of other leagues., the first game you could see teams were off the pace.
