Only about 34% of the electorate....fewer if you include UK citizens living overseas.....actually voted to leave. In countries like Switzerland, where referendums are a part of their political system, it is normal to require at least 60% voting for a policy before it is adopted, especially on such a massively importance issue as this.
Yet fewer than 34% voted to remain. It was a simple choice, leave or stay. Those were the rules, not requiring a certain percentage. Those abstaining have only themselves to blame if they weren't happy with the outcome. A question was asked, an answer given and so it's incumbent on May to ensure it's acted upon. Her proposal is neither one or the other.
