Transfers - Summer 2024

When you think on it it, over the years (with an odd exception) how many teams, with 'superstars,' have actually won the league.
It's usually a hard working team of 'equals' who come together to become a winning unit
.
I’ve often thought of how other sides do so well without superstars . Compare The chavs this year to Brighton .

Not a lot of difference in league position but a bit of a mismatch in the banking department .

Agree....IMO it comes down to: Player desire, Team spirit, Tactics, Coach & player nous when it needs to change mid match.

I would say that with the exception of City before they signed Haaland, all the league winners had a superstar striker at least. Think back to Aguerro, Diego Costa, Van Persie, Vardy, Mané, Henri, Cole, Ronaldo etc. Just a shame we weren't able to put a better team around the gem we had.

My priority for the summer would be a top class defensive midfielder, maybe in the making rather than the finished article from a cost point of view. I'm talking about potential to be another Rodri, if we had a good screen in front of our defence and reduced our goals conceded we might get more games over the line as wins.

I hope he is our no.1 priority that and or a truly B2B midfield general, we need that anchor/screen in front of our defence or we will never stem the amount of poor goals we let in.

Are we not looking at Bergvall as the B2B (no. 8 player)? I see Sarr and Bentancur as 6/8 players so we are well covered there. I can see Lo Celso and Hojbjerg going in the summer and possibly Skipp too if we can replace him with another homegrown such as Gallagher or Gibbs-White who can play the 8/10 role.

To be honest, I was thinking about Gallagher and how well he'd fit in with us, him or someone very much like him; tough, hardworking, good passer of the ball, excellent tackler, but also capable of contributing goals - he has fight in his belly when it matters - he'd be a massive step up on Hoj.

Your description fits Gibbs-White very well also, he could be a more realistic target and has a good understanding with BJ.

hmmm, I'm not convinced, he's an attacking midfielder, we need a midfield general who can break up play, tackle, see a forward pass and also screen our defence, he's more of an attacking midfielder and is not a very good tackler in my view, great skills and work ethic, two good feet, but he's a second striker/attacking midfielder for me, and I think we're well covered there now that everyone is back and so he wouldn't offer us a big upgrade on what we have now.

That said I know we were scouting him constantly towards the end of '23, but decided against making a move (could be 10 different reasons why), so he is on our radar but I suspect that Ange has other priorities.

That said, if they get relegated, I think we'd make a move for him.

I was thinking both, Gibbs-White to replace Lo Celso and a number 6 to replace Hojbjerg and/or Skipp.

Hi LT,
Whilst I take your point there's 1 or 2 on that list and I wouldn't call them super stars.
There were one or two stand out players but for me very few, superstars.
But some of them were intregal parts of a good team.
when you think on it we (Spurs) as a team were at our best( lately) when were were a team of equals.

Yes Niall, I agree, there is a range of quality in those I listed. I do think however that having an elite or maybe just a specialist goal scorer makes the difference when it comes to winning things. But as we found, one man doesn't do it on his own.

Must admit LT, Drogba to a degree carried Chelsea at times, and how many occasions , did Manure win 1-0 in the 90's scorer Cantona.

Levy has given us the ability to have our pick of players this summer when FFP bites again.

I'd love us to try and get Bruno or Isak from Newcastle.

Luiz from Villa would be another good addition.

Isn't Neves more of an 8 rather than an a 6? I think we have enough 8's already.

I'm still going back to what I see missing. We can't keep having to depend on Madds dropping deep to see some decent mid to long range passes. All we do the rest of the time is 5-a-side passing and it's easy to setup against. The reason I thought of Neves is that he disrupts the opposition with some amazing mid to long range passing as well as the easier short stuff whilst playing quite deep.

Said this before, but we miss a Carrick type player.

I've got to disagree; Carrick's key strength and playing position was as a deep lying playmaker where his almost uncanny ability to pick a pass, and deliver it was probably one of, if not the best I've ever seen. He was a true Quarterback, who could play any pass he liked under pressure - a rare talent.

But his tackling was often less than great, he didn't score many goals, and he wasn't a true B2B player - in his heyday, in fact if anything the reason so many were marmite on him was because he could be frustratingly lazy at times, and the fans would know it. Fergie knew this and put him alongside players that compensated for these weaknesses. He had no steel and wasn't a leader.

It's a player without his weaknesses we need, even if they aren't the greatest passer.
