Summer Transfer Rumours

Doubt if we will get Miller but according to the Peterborough evening telegraphs interview with Steve Evans yesterday we are one of four clubs after Anthony grant.

He won't be "commuting" from anywhere for the next two or three years. He will have to move or stay in hotel or return to playing part-time near wherever he is living now.
also...
"ordered to take part in a six month alcohol treatment programme and attend 35 days of rehabilitation requirement"

so any club that signs him has to consider: when is he going to fit in this time off? where is it going to be? who decides on the schedule, miller or the law?

That newspaper report makes horrible reading. Deeply embarrassing for the player and immensely damaging for his career, or what remains of it. Furthermore, this far from a temporary or isolated aberration.

Weigh up the pros and cons:

Pro:
** 40 goals for Dover in the National League in 2016-17
** 28 goals for Boston in Conference North in 2013-14

Con:
** Is he a Cowley character?
** Regular anti-social behaviour over the course of more than a decade
** Banned from driving for possibly the rest of his football career (should have been ten years in my ex-underwriter eyes), causing serious logistical issues
** Those alcohol and community rehabilitation orders possibly interfering with his day job, as nlondonimp points out
** Nearly 30 years old
** 27 clubs in 12 years, about to become 28
** Poor record in the Football League
** Managed to collect more yellow cards than goals at Mansfield
** Disruptive influence on others?

This sounds incredibly harsh, but they are facts. Forgetting about the off-field stuff, his record on the pitch doesn't really stand up to scrutiny either.

If he does come here, he has an awful lot of convincing to do. Does he have the character to pull that off?

Good points, well made. After the sentencing, I do not think it would be a good idea to sign him.

What about public transport? He can get the train up during the week and route 103 from City bus station would see him at Scampton by 9am. It's no Range Rover but he'll get a seat and a chance to hear all the gossip.

two court cases. three times caught and guilty of drink-driving. and the biting ban. he was also quoted as threatening to bite off a policeman's nose, does he have a thing about biting?

how many players in our squad have this kind of background?
how many imps supporters are happy to cheer-on a character like this?

to balance this - teachers must be used to giving an infinite number of second chances to pupils.

A player like Miller, who is currently ‘down and out’, career stalling, drink problems, court cases etc. is normally a player to avoid. But a player like Miller can also bag you 30 goals a season that see you promoted.
Taking his current situation into account, his travel difficulties, unpredictability etc. can also mean a cut price, low wage deal.
If he really wants to keep his head down, get his career back on track and give 100% to the club then we would be silly to turn him down.
It’s a gamble though. How much would it take for his attitude to change? A few games on the bench? A substitution? We just don’t know.
The question is, can we find another 30 goal a season man out there for the same transfer / wage as Miller without the baggage? I doubt it.

Where is the evidence for that, though? He has had two good seasons in his career, one in the Conference North (two levels below where we are, and three below where we want to be in a year's time), and that one season at Dover (one and two levels below respectively). Miller has scored 2 goals in 30 Football League games, which is far from being a 30-goal a year man. We saw last season how much of a step-up League Two is from the National League, and some players are just not up to it. The evidence suggests Miller is one of those.

to be fair to miller he had two brilliant goalscoring seasons in a row at dover. 2015-2017. 22 in 54 and 45 in 46.

but surely the closest barometer is his effort in league two as recently as the last six months. and thanks to mansfield for letting him do the audition at their expense.
