Van Dyke, Alexander Arnold, Jota and Thiago amongst other top players have travelled and are all in the squad for tonight.

Never heard of any of them. Doesn't mean they aren't any good of course and if they play for Liverpool then by default they should be of a high standard.

Have we ever played the reigning champions in a competitive game before?

I wondered that. We’ve come close. We played H v Wolves FA Cup 3rd Round Jan 1958, Wolves won First Division that season.

Also when we played A v Portsmouth, FA Cup 3rd Round Jan 1952, Portsmouth won First Division in 1949 and 1950 but not 1951.

You could ask,bearing in mind the best club sides are probably stronger than international sides now - have we ever played what many people would say is the best side in the world before ? (I know Bayern Munich might have something to say about that and its not Liverpool's first team!)
