Coronavirus

Despite many millions of the most likely to die seemingly now vaccinated?
So have then been? Or is the "first dose only strategy" also failing?

Those people tragically dying at the moment contracted the virus around 4 weeks ago, almost exactly during the Xmas break...

So have then been? Or is the "first dose only strategy" also failing?

As SincilBanks says, most of the people dying now would have contracted the virus in late December, or possibly before, as it usually takes a minimum of 24 days (my back of the envelope calculation) to die following infection. Some will have contracted it weeks earlier but struggled on in ICU.

Of course, there is also the statistical thing where a lot of the deaths reported day-to-day may have taken place on other dates, some as far back as the autumn, but have only now been added to the statistics. The statistics sort themselves out eventually.

Regarding the vaccinations, even after receiving one dose it takes two weeks to build up the immunity. In fact, there have been a few reported cases of people contracting the virus very soon after being vaccinated. There should be enough immunity in the first dose (especially Pfizer's) to make some impact on the death rate of older people, but you can't actually measure that until 6 weeks or so after that first injection. Early data from Israel (also using Pfizer, and leading the global vaccination programme) suggests there is an impact. What the scientists will be looking for starting now is a decrease in hospitalisation of vaccinated groups,.

However, even with the vaccination programme, actual case rates will only decline with lockdown measures, not with the vaccination programme, because un-vaccinated people will still get it, and most people who actually get it are 12-50 - the last cohort scheduled for a jab. That is why we have to keep restrictions until enough of the population is vaccinated. Of course, if the vaccination is shown to reduce transmission, things could get back to normal quicker. But those studies can only be done in real time, in sync with the programme.

They seem very good at instant quoting of exact numbers of people vaccinated.
Therefore, they ought to be able to give daily figures on how many if those vaccinated then got the virus and how many of those then died.
This would therefore show how well the vaccinations are going.
Israel have reported tens of thousands still getting the disease after being vaccinated and concluding (at the moment at least) that the vaccine is a fair bit less effective than was advertised.

As numbers vaccinated is now into the millions (here and globally), there really should be better knowledge as to the effectiveness compared to the trials which covered just a few thousand people.

And also, how many here have now received the required 2nd dose apart from Mr S Johnson?

I think there will be preliminary studies out there on this, although I haven't looked. Scientists will be very keen to find out the kind of information you are describing.

I would imagine there is exactly that sort of analysis going on right now, but the data needs to be collected and collated and then any conclusions peer-reviewed. Look how long it took to establish that the rise in cases was linked to the new variant, work started in September and it wasn't an official conclusion until December.

You can still get the disease after being vaccinated, but it should be a lot less severe and should result in a big drop in the death rate. Even in Israel it is still too early to accurately measure the full efficacy.

The real test of the efficacy is, as you say, not if it prevents the virus completely but if it reduces the risk of serious ill health, hospital visits and death. If it stops people catching it completely great...massive bonus, and I'm sure it will in a significant number of cases...

Unfortunately i happened to watch the BBC news this evening , and saw the item regarding a lady with breast cancer , gone through all the treatments , and was expecting an operation that could have continued her recovery , and guess what said procedure has been put back due to covid , possibly cancelled .

Around half a million people at least have had cancer procedures , cancer treatment and cancer consultations cancelled or put back , thus putting more lives at risk .

then some fucking no mark of a woman , some posh broad said it will be to late for some of them . how fucking dare she treat cancer people with such disdain

yes , Covid is a terrible condition , but cancer is and always will be worse . one in two people will get some form of cancer in their lives , much worse that covid , and remember there is no vaccine for cancer

and they say school children and the forgotten people of cancer ???? really
