Totally agree.
I think Worrall and McKenna have only managed a game or two together. Definately one we need to see more of
We don't remotely have the fullbacks or midfield quality for 3 at the back I don't think
You do not need full backs to play three at the back, you need wing backs.
Christies strikes me as a more natural wing back than full back; he certainly looks far better getting forward than he does defensively, although he has improved in that respect.
Ribeiro might be the same although I am not sure he will ever produce decent crosses or link up effectively.
The problem with playing wing backs is you take away the need for Lolley, Ameobi and Knockheart, unless you play one of them at wing back which would be a tremendous gamble.
I do not see midfield as being the prohibitive factor, certainly not if we get Krovinovic and Garner back, which is a big if.
3 5 2 would not be inevitable we could play 3 4 2 1 or 3 4 1 2 with very little new blood in the side.
And who would be the two forwards (if we play with two)?
I would be reluctant to play Taylor if we only had ten fit players; maybe Johnson would be ideal for that role.
He has had licence to roam at Lincoln and has done very well, playing with great intelligence.
The problem with three at the back starts at the back; when have we had three fit centre backs?
If Hughton does have designs on playing three at the back, the rumours about Duffy make sense.
Despite not playing together with any regularity, Worrall and McKenna look the real deal; however we still look vulnerable at set pieces; maybe sticking someone in between them who is very good in the air is what Hughton wants.
He would also add some more experience and leadership, qualities Figueiredo does not offer.
I do not think because Hughton has not played with three at the back so far it is any indication he is averse to the idea.
When he came in his first job was to stop the ship sinking; that meant sorting out the defence and the spine of the side.
The emphasis would have been on keeping things simple; tinkering around with formations would not have helped.
The injuries he encountered after that would have reinforced that view.
If we get another centre back and there are no departures in that area, I can quite easily see Hughton giving three at the back a whirl.
