Transfers - Summer 2024

Agreed. We can play well in bursts but not the whole game. Even in the first ten games we didn't dominate the games.

This way of playing is taxing and leaves you wide open on the counter.

I personally think the players know this way of playing won't cut it in the prem.
They are going to get (those who remain) a completely different pre-season to any they've probably experienced in their life, come July.

The expectation is that this will improve almost everyone's conditioning and resilience.

But, like you, I await proof that this suicidal high line, which is our one and only game tactic can last.

So what does Ange know about improving everyone's conditioning and resilience that no other manager does then?

Most likely, we'll be launching a new specialist soft tissue department at The Lodge.

I see it more as quality.

Ange has 25 players right now, and has used most of them across the entire season to be fair. It would be nice to majorly upgrade 5 or 6 of them though. Then rotation and injury replacements have less impact.

I have a feeling Ange will break some players physically.
Ange himself said not everyone (the majority!) hadn't bought into his approach.

I'm not surprised.

Players are not stupid (most now have personal health advisors).

RD correctly pointed out that Bielsa had a similar system (A constant high press, ball retention, fast transition and covering longer distances), the players are not stupid.

They and their advisors all now know that these game after game tactics are likely to both physically and mentally exhaust them, and open you up to constant soft tissue injuries - and you only have to look at Kalvin Phillips who went to City - they simply couldn't repair him and now at The Spam he looks like a Championship player at best; niggling injuries, can barely run properly anymore, and a complete loss of form and physical conditioning. He may not ever bounce back.

That's why players and their advisors have to consider carefully, the quality of the squad, the likelihood of good squad rotation and even the physio and health dept. before they consider a move.

Some players we approach, will simply turn us down because of it, no matter how much we offer them, many believe it is a career limiting way of playing the game.

I don't blame them. So yes, Ange will know that he will break them.

So players have Nanny’s.

They mitigate, or did, by high quality rotation.

Quality of depth.

If you have that, you can compete playing any viable style. And no one has proven that Ange's tactics do not work. It is better to have an open mind while seeing if they will work.

And like all good managers, the core philosophy has to be instilled before you vary your tactics.

Unless you are trying to avoid relegation, then you work with what you have. That's why mid-table teams hire managers that can utilize existing assets. They have no hope of challenging, just not being relegated.

These days, every aspect of their lives is managed for them; it's just the way it is now.

Nothing can be left to chance when your lifetime earning potential can be between £40-150 mill as a Premium league player.

Agents make sure they get the best advice on just about everything.

Of course.

Biesla had big problems with injuries in his 2nd season as well. Similar philosophy and tactics.
Hi RD, good to see you back, said as much myself re Bielsa on another thread, his 'play one way' tactic was found out and indeed countered by the 2nd season.
It can be an entertaining watch at times, but indeed is open to risk.
My issue is that, since February March we've now had our ducks in a row So to speak, all of our best players have been available with few exceptions,
we've had no destracions from Europe.
But somehow we've lost our impetus a bit, and on occasions frankly been given a lesson.
Obvious frailties in our playing style and defence haven't been addressed.
I do hope I'm wrong, but this 'one way' tactic at this level just seems fraught with danger espically (away) against bigger teams. We have done better than many thought this season and it has been a roller coaster ride, but of late, given the games/opposition and prep time we've had, there are occasions, were I expected better from us.

Pochettino played the same way. And the season after he left plenty od "excuses" were made for players being burnt out. That's not a judgment, just an observation.

But it does bring us back to quality of depth which if we had had this season we wouldn't have floundered as much after game 12 and 4th, at a minimum, would be nailed on.
