The Testimonial

There is a technical distinction between a testimonial (awarded after 10 years service) and a benefit match (usually awarded following serious injury).
I'm not sure I agree with that. There are many articles in the newspaper archive telling of benefit matches for Imps players, usually after being on the club's books for 5 years. I suspect they happened more frequently when the maximum wage existed. This was reported in Dec 1936 for a match to be played the following year-

There’s a technical, in terms of risk, difference between a benefit and a testimonial. As I understand things, in a benefit match the player gets all the proceeds so is at risk if the attendance is small (this frequently happened in cricket if it rained). In a testimonial there is some guaranteed income.
 
I think I'm right in saying Lincoln has never produced an England international - there's a challenge for Mr Skubala.
