The Marvelous Nakamba Thread

McGinn is an expert at giving the ball away when we’re pressing high up the pitch on the attack, this then launches a dangerous counter attack when we have limited numbers defending.

He does this more often than Nakamba giving it away in a dangerous area.
It's a fair point. We do excel in specialists at giving the ball away. Think McGinn's passing avg. for the season was 80%, compared to Ramsey and Luiz both on 87%. If Gerrard wants to play "possession-based" football like he says, we can't afford midfielders to be misplacing one in every five passes.

Perversely, Marv has an 86% pass completion but two errors leading to a goal for a season where he didn't play much. Douggie, who was left all alone in midfield for most of the season only had one.

Players with high pass completion stats are often those that play safe, short passes. Pretty sure I read somewhere that Ruben Dias had the highest completion rate in the PL, but most of his are either sideways or 5 yards forward to Rodri. McGinn is often trying to hit long crossfield balls so I’d expect his to be lower than Marv. And Marvs problem is his miss-hit passes tend to be on the edge of our box and lead to goalscoring opportunities

My issue with Nakamba is defensively he always seems to be chasing the ball, rather than being ahead of it by having good anticipation and positional sense. He’s incredible at winning the ball but to me he lacks that bit of composure you need from an anchor man. You want someone who will sit in deep and hold that position to stop anyone from getting past centrally to either win the ball and / or crucially to slow any oncoming attacks down. When everything is at 100 miles an hour it’s difficult to defend against, and it’s up to the midfield to bog the opposition down in the first instance if they can’t win it back. So although he has some great defensive attributes he just doesn’t help us control the tempo well enough, either out of possession or in possession due to his weaknesses on the ball.

I think his passing ability is less of an issue, it’s obviously a liability but it can be accounted for by ensuring we provide options around him to make easy passes too

The only thing Marvellous about him is his name.

He panics on the ball and looks like he can't wait quick enough to be free of it hence misplaced passes.

It's a crucial position for any team and we should be doing better than him but that's just my own opinion so don't shoot me down!

Thought he looked more comfortable once SG arrived and, with a run in the team, could have made that position his own. We'll never know now because injury curtailed his season and we've moved on - hopefully to bigger and better things. Ironically he was brought on in our last home game to shore up things and BOOM, we concede three in five minutes :ROFLMAO:. You may be right TH.

Wasn't somebody allegedly interested in him a year or two a go like Palace or Forest?

Hes not the quality that we want but a decent lower prem defensive midfielder

I think he's very cool on the ball and never panics, he'll have it anywhere on the pitch. In fact, he's so cool on the ball that it's the crowd that panics. Same as they do when Dougie has it.
You're watching a different player to me, I'm not big on stats but he rarely gives the ball away and across his time here has something like 86% pass competition which is higher than the other players

With respect 57, if he was that good he would be playing every week under any Villa manager we have had.

But he hasn't and that's why he's available. And that's football, full of differing opinions.

He was never going to start ahead of Dougie who is another player much maligned by some, same as Dendoncker another that's a decent payer but not in the same league as Dougie and Kamara

I like Marvelous. He is never displacing Kamara though and im expecting Tim to be his under study next season. Emery is getting ready for major surgery in the Summer.

Think we have always questioned our managers decisions and i always felt we were right in most cases. Nakamba always seemed a solid enough player, surprised someone is not interested in him but Emery is aiming to take us to the next level and he will demand he has the right players to do that. I think Emery is quite happy with most of what he has inherited and we can all see a big difference in them since he's been here, but some will not be good enough for that next level. As said, Nakamba will do a job for a lower prem club, but we are not aiming to be one of those.

The reason his passing stats were so high is because the vast majority of them are simple 5 yard balls backwards and sideways.
