Sunday Chimes - The links

From the Front Page

All Pompey fans will be absolutely delighted to hear that Jack Whatmough has signed an extension to his Pompey contract according to the club’s official site. The deal reportedly will keep Jack at Fratton Park until 2017.

The 17-year-old defender was handed his senior debut against Southend last November and has made a total of nine first team appearances. He was also called up for an England under-18 training camp before making his Three Lions bow against Croatia last month.

Caretaker Blues boss Andy Awford said: “Jack has made a big impression this season and deserves a new deal. We’re delighted that he’s shown commitment to the Pompey cause by agreeing to lengthen his stay here. I’d also like to thank chief executive Mark Catlin and finance director Tony Brown for all their hard work in getting this deal completed.”

Jack has impressed for his maturity at such a young age and as one fan said to me on Saturday when he was easily man of the match in the win over Hartlepool United ‘does this kid ever make a mistake?’

We all hope the club can keep hold of their prize asset but with clubs bound to be hovering around it may be difficult. However he is from Gosport and maybe just maybe he will show loyalty to his own local club.

One year today

Yes believe it or not it is exactly one year since Mr Justice Peter Smith signed the order saving Portsmouth Football Club and handing control over to the fans and the Pompey Trust.

A great deal has happened in that year and Toast on Sunday will look in more detail at that but let’s all continue to celebrate that WE saved OUR club and despite a very disappointing season we do have a club to support every Saturday!!

well done Jack, learn more with Pompey by playing week in week out then we accept a big offer, just like scummers do, any news on Magri?

Shame Wallace doesn't do the honorable thing and sign as well

Oh, and it is GREAT news on Whatmough - looks a cracking talent and I waxed lyrical about him after the game last weekend.

I liked this kid the last time he had a run in the side. He seems even better now.

Glad we have signed him up. Really good news.

Andy Awford has brought him thru. from the youth sides, maybe the fact tha AA is still here helped him make up his mind to commit for 3 years.

It certainly would not have done any harm would it lorna.

Whatmough wants to be here, we want him here and he has a good future ahead of him - tying him down, to a 3-year deal, I think is a sensible move given his age and ability. It also puts us in a strong positions if clubs start sniffing around.

If he keeps going like is they will, sooner or later...

He might only be 18 and might also still have things to learn but Whatmough seems to be learning pretty quickly and is a player that I am always happier having in the side than not.

He might only be 18 and might also still have things to learn but Jack Whatmough seems to be learning pretty quickly to be fair and is a player that I am always happier having in the side than not.

A hamstring injury at the start of October has kept him out since but he made his return for the ressies this week against Bournemouth.

This return should mean he's ready to return this weekend when Carlisle come to Fratton?

Whatmough has, at times, shown his naivety and inexperience – he needs to learn that he CANNOT win every ball and sometimes you have to bide your time, that is youthful naivety though I feel – but his quality is undoubted and he will only get better and better.

Given his ability, and comfort on the ball, I can perhaps see a role as a defensive midfielder in front of the back four something he could grow into in time, and he has previously played that kind of role.

Defensively we look a lot more secure this season but I would hope he comes back into the team tomorrow to be honest...

We have certainly missed his athleticism at the back and it's always great to watch a home grown youngster bursting with the enthusiasm of youth. Would be the first name on my team sheet every time if fit!
