Sunday Chimes - The links

Loaning players out is always a concern for me at this level. Fair enough if it is a Premiership or Championship youngster because they may be loaned out to a club playing at a decent level. He looked useful against Herman's side, but then again, that was a friendly and they did allow Pompey to play football. Would we be loaning Whatmough out merely to get playing time and to get him 'battle hardened' or do we actually want him to go somewhere where he can develop and learn his craft? It must be the right club for the right reasons.

its a fine line isnt it Emsworthian.

got plenty of thoughts on this loan issue, plan to write something about it but do agree that this loaning has to work for us - maybe out of necessity but these kids were 'good enough' last season so i do not want us slipping too much into that route again of neglecting our own talent and simply bringing it in from elsewhere, free agents or not...

as it happens tho, with the right team, i do think that whatmough would benefit from a short-term loan.

A first professional deal with Pompey has been signed by Jack Whatmough. A long-term deal at that so he definitely is 'one for the future' it would seem.

Quite clearly Jack Whatmough is a future prospect for Pompey.

Why else would we tie him down to a long-term contract?

This is exactly what we have done with it confirmed that the 17-year-old defender has signed his first professional deal, with it being a 3-year contract so, like I say, we clearly view him as someone with potential as its unusual for a long-term deal to be offered at his stage of development.

I have not seen the guy play, he was on the bench for the Plymouth defeat last season – then again I would not have 'seen him' anyway as I was absolutely hammered that night...

Those that I know that have, including pre-season last summer I think, would say that 'the shaggy hair blonde kid looks good'.

So he is!

Perhaps a chance will come in the Paint Pot Trophy although I would suspect it is more likely that he will be farmed out on loan to further his development, which would be a sensible move as he needs 1st team football to further his development.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

I think I know the guy from the Trust fundraiser?

Looked good that night.

Very pleased to see the conveyor belt of talent continuing to operate. Well done Pompey.

yep he played in that game and had a stand out game by all account...

really missed a trick with the title didnt i!

'What more could Jack want' would have been pretty impressive...

with a name like whatmough, think how you would say it, sounds like what more right?

well at just 17 and dished out a 3-year deal what more could jack want...

Oh my oh my Tim, the degree or two's difference in temperature certainly has had an impact on the grey matter...

think you had your 'hitlers barber' jacket zipped up a bit too tightly at the weekend and it killed some of the brain cells Tim...

anyway, back to what more...sorry whatmough, hopefully we can get him out on loan pretty soon and possible from some point next season start seeing him make inroads into the 1st team?

perhap even a loan until christmas could work with the second half of this campaign seeing him get a little squad involvement...

He's another Gosport mush too!

Come on Paul, we can't hold that against him. I think there are some normal people from there. Perhaps?? :91:

Sounds like Whatmough came in and had a decent debut?

Incredibly highly rated and not even 17 until the end of December I dont think!

Didnt see him on Tuesday, has he done enough to retain his place at the weekend do we think and beyond?

He shows great promise for one so young. Not sure his best position will be centre back as it remains to be seen how much more he grows and bulks up. The thing is, on Tuesday he showed great confidence as well. There is the conundrum. Do you pick him again in a side struggling for results and confidence? Listening to the boos which have been going around the Park of late, I am not sure this is good for his development in the immediate future. If lads like him are to be played, then the fans will have to be a little more tolerant and accept the odd gaffe as part of the learning and maturing process and the fact that some of the old pros will outwit and outmuscle youngsters until thay become 'street wise'.

I'vve seen Whatmough develop since joining the academy and was always the stand out kid ... His position IS centre half although I suspect that will take him a little time to establish at this level ....

Interesting Awford rates Whatmough more than Webster and he rated Webster more than Magri (remember him) .. So good things are expected of him...

If all develop (as they should) ... I see a Pompey defence of ..

Warren, Whatmough, Webster & Butler in a couple of seasons.. Now that is a great Academy production line .. and everybody complained when we let Magri go to QPR reserves

Not sure we can say that Awford rates Whatmough more than Webster tho can we?

Webster is out on loan, that decision was one that GW made. I think we would have a truer idea on that if both Whamough and Webster were both at Fratton at this point in time.

I would like to see the likes of Webster and Butler back, but until a new manager comes in I think it is probably in their best interests to stay where they are and let that manager decide - they are back soon anyway, but may as well let them keep playing for a few more weeks now that they are out.

Also not sure we can compare Magri or Webster, again they play in different positions and a different manager made the call. Clearly Magri has potential or QPR would not have signed him. He might not make made the breakthrough, and maybe never will, but he stepped up.

I was disappointed, I think I still am tbh as I am pretty sure he would be in the 1st team had he stayed as I cannot think that (even if championship or higher is beyond him) league one or two is. We werent in a position to do this, and Appy didnt want him anyway.

Not sure how much we can write of Magri at this stage, or indeed (to be fair) talk him up.

Whatmough tho, he has been very highly regarded and I look forward to seeing him myself soon as I reckon he will keep his place, under Awford at least...

Definitely one for the long-term, but if he is good enough he is old enough and the best way for him to develop is by playing 1st team football.

Completely get, and understand, the point about how the crowd could have an impact on him tho and do hope that this booing stops - I wasnt at the game on Tuesday but was it really warranted?

I think we should get Webster back as soon as his loan is up, & play him & Whatmough alternative games partnering Bradley in the centre of defence, also bring Dan Butler back and give him plenty of match time.

The good news is that Jack Whatmough has signed a new 3 year contract today. Which means that if a big club does sign him Pompey will be able to get a nice large cheque. Nice one Jack & Andy Awford. :1:
