Summer Transfer Thread 2021

Championship club Blackpool are reportedly set to sign Chelsea player Dujon Sterling on loan before the transfer window shuts.

According to Football London, the 21-year-old has agreed a new deal to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge. It is understood that the youngster will pen a fresh two-year deal that includes the option of an extra year.

However, the report explains that he’ll now leave the Blues on loan to play regular first-team football in the second tier.

Football London’s report explains that the defender has impressed Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and his staff during pre-season, but he’ll now head to Blackpool on a season-long loan.

Sterling, who’s a huge talent to come from the Chelsea academy, has played two senior games for the club during his career.

Some of his senior development has been away from West London, though, with previous loans at Coventry City and Wigan Athletic.

The London-born defender will now hope to shine for a Blackpool side that are currently in the bottom three of the Championship.

If Sterling’s loan deal is finalised, it’s a vital 2021/22 season for him.

He’s a versatile defender that can play as a centre-back or wing-back in a back-three, but judging by Blackpool’s system perhaps he’ll operate as a right-back in a four-man defence.

The speedster has all the traits of modern day full-back and you should look at the calibre of right-backs to come out of Cobham in recent years. Reece James, Tariq Lamptey and Tino Livramento all fall into that category.

Tuchel liking Sterling is a massive confidence boost for him, so he now needs to go impress in the Championship if he’s going to propel himself into the first team at the Bridge

If true what is this saying? We have little confidence in Stewart playing anywhere near a season, Virtue unlikely to be back to the player he was, we couldn't attract a loan player to cover injuries, Dougal carrying an injury, he is a different player to the others?

BLACKPOOLBLACKPOOL LODGE SIX-FIGURE BID FOR 25-YEAR-OLD MIDFIELDER

Blackpool have submitted a six-figure bid for Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan, as per a report from Football Insider.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Liverpool academy at a very young age, progressed through the ranks at Anfield before making his first-team debut under Jurgen Klopp in an FA Cup clash victory over Bournemouth in October 2015.

Departing The Reds in 2018, after nine appearances at first-team level and a loan spell with Fleetwood Town, Brannagan joined Oxford United on a permanent deal.

Since joining The U’s the 25-year-old has played 150 games, scoring 16 times and assisting a further 14.

Brannagan has played every minute of the new campaign thus far, captaining the side against Bolton Wanderers last week, and netting his first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic earlier in the month.

The verdict

Brannagan has proved to be a classy midfield operator in the third-tier ever since his 2018 arrival, and it is no real shock to see some higher-level interest coming in for him.

His passing range, vision, and work ethic, all suggest that he is a player that can step up to the Championship.

If he is to depart, then that will come as awful news for Oxford. He has been an integral part of their recent play-off pushes and will leave a glaring void in the middle of the park.

Blackpool’s recruitment strategy has perhaps differed a little bit from how a lot of promoted clubs add to their squad in the higher division. They have not signed too many players with Championship experience, instead, they have opted for younger, talented individuals.

From Vital Oxford:

Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan has attracted the interest of newly promoted Blackpool, according to Football Insider.

The report suggests that the Seasiders have submitted a six-figure bid for the 25-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current deal.

The 2018/19 Player of the Season has become a key part of Karl Robinson’s side and has turned out over 150 times for the U’s.

The club rejected an offer, believed to be from Millwall, last season and Robinson revealed a bid had been rejected for an unnamed player from another club before the U’s 3-1 win over Lincoln on Saturday.

If the U’s are to lose Brannagan, who does have a buyout clause in his contract, they already have a new midfielder lined up. Speaking before the game, he said: “Something cropped up yesterday that we called an emergency board meeting.

“It was something we couldn’t say no to really – the quality of the player, it was a necessity to do it.”

So genuine link man between midfield and attack?

When I've watched Oxford (limited viewings, granted!) he's played more as the playmaker in midfield, but slightly deeper at the base of a midfield 3? Comparisons to Pirlo (style, not quality) are abound on the Oxford forums.

He sounds like exactly the sort of player we should be going after, but i'm sceptical that Oxford (having already sold one of the better players for good money this summer) will let him go for anything under £1m this close to the end of the window.

One Oxford fan on Avftt reckons thry have turned us down, that his release clause has already expired for this window and that he won't be leaving. Would we sign both Wintle and him?

I wonder what his 'expired' release clause said. I suppose Oxford could still sell him

Dougall, Stewart, Wintle? Who else have we got that can play in the middle? Virtue and Ward injured.

James and Connolly can cover there, but don’t think it’s either natural position

He's normally a '10' but Oxford had injuries last season and moved him back to a deeper role.

Gabriel AND potentially Sterling in?

If we didn't only have 2 points from 5 games you might say it was worth the wait!

Hopefully they both come off though. What do we think our remaining priorities are then?

- Playmaking midfielder (ala Branaghan?)
- Wide Player (Crewe lad - or can Sterling play further up as well?)
- ?

Still got a few loan spaces left. Any rumours on Simms Abel?

Don't we need to get some players out?

I'd love us to get Simms and Brannagan. Need the walking wounded, I thought maddine was near fit?

I keep saying Simms will be permanent if it happens.
