Nicky Shorey gone

Well I'm sure the manager would have total say on who comes in and out of the squad. The recruitment manager could only recommend a player to Harris, who would then go and have a look to make his own mind up. I couldn't imagine a situation where a player turns up to training and announces to the manager that he's the new centre half!
Normally under the head coach/director of football model the head coach says they want ‘this kind of striker’ or ‘that kind of midfielder’. Then the Director of Football identifies suitable players to which they sit down and discuss, before liaising with the directors to say ‘get him’.

I’m assuming the Head of Recruitment was the same kind of thing along with also identifying potential new additions for the youth teams?

Personally don’t really understand why we’ve replaced him. Do we really need to use funds on a recruitment department at our level? Why not just let the manager have total say over the recruitment then everyone knows it’s solely their responsibility.

I really dont understand why people question the role of scouting. We should have done this a decade ago or more. We have barely sold any players for money, sign sub par players a lot and the days of the manager scouting are long gone.

A modern club will have a scouting department looking into all aspects of recruitment. Its a full time specialised job.

I’ve heard that many of these consultants use a stat based system similar to the moneyball system that Brentford used and still do.
Identify under valued players or players coming to the end of contracts.
Anyone with six months left in the lower divisions should be fair game.
There are probably quite a few league one players with six months left who want a move.
It’s really depends on whether we are spending or not.

Surely just apply player filter by contract expiring and look for anyone with “Shooting 20”?

Again we are signing professional footballers and trying to unearth gems before other clubs do. We are competing against specialised talented recruiting departments. Without this working we cannot help generate a large part of a sustainable budget.

Shorey obviously didn't work and im not arguing that. But the idea of a recruitment department is 100% needed.

Determination 20 may come in handy as well. Good work rate or asking too much?

You’re now combining SBT with Gary Mulligan and they cost money.

They new guy had clearly been brought in to unearth talent in the national league that we can’t afford ahead of our battle to stay at the top of the pyramid.

Neither am I, but as Trashbat confirms that he was full time, a huge part of his duties must have been scouting for the future. A future that, hopefully, will now be much changed.

Otherwise, considering that the transfer window closes at the end of August when the squad should have been fully compiled for better or worse (the latter, obviously), it would be hard to see how he filled his days after that. Signing players in the January window is never ideal and the volume of players changing clubs is much reduced.

Mr King seems to be taking a rather prominent role. He countersigned the Galinson charge document, involved (as agent?) in signing Callum and now gets a job as head of recruitment.

impartial witness? Usually need to be a company director, lawyer, accountant etc

Unless we are able to pay transfer fees?
We could be looking at a clear out as the main reason for the lack of form. There will always be loan players available given the size of squads higher up the pyramid. That's up to five .That could be already in motion given team selection in recent times. On top of that a few purchases. Add on perhaps one or two free deals and we possibly have a squad of around 24 to 26 senior players. Which will mean well over half of the squad will not even make the bench.

Unless he is focussed on youth or free agents then whats the point if we dont pay fees or give long enough contracts to develop and sell at a profit ?

Little point in him identifying players that require a fee as we havent paid one for a long time.

That could be about to change.

Don't want Nil Harris choosing, thank you.

Our priorities have shifted given how we have performed this season.

we need to do what we can to stay in the league and then start thinking about developing players to sell

I’ve enjoyed reading some of the musings, theories, rumour and conspiracy theories. Some good stuff.

My own one is that the new ownership (if it’s happening) is putting their first (maybe 2nd or 3rd?) mark on things. I think anyone can see that our recruitment under Shorey has not worked at all. Total failure. And it’s the head of that department that has to carry the can.

It would not surprise me at all if NH is next, or decides to fall on his sword. It is a massive clip around the ears to him. Someone he brought in to a pretty significant role has been removed and immediately replaced.

But it would also not surprise me if NH survives. And if he does, my conspiracy theory is that he was always the person identified by the future ownership as the person for the “long term project”. Back in January I was gobsmacked that NH decided to come here. It hasn’t worked out (yet), but his stock and reputation back then could have landed him any job in L2, L1 and a lot of Champ clubs. Why come to GFC, dead and buried in L1 with no money? So my thinking is that this takeover (if it happens) has been in the planning a long time, and PS was advised to get rid SE and pursue NH. And NH knew about the upcoming changes.

Interesting those comments about the new recruiter being involved with the club on a few fronts now. Not sure if I’m intrigued or worried.

Gonna be an interesting few months coming up.

It seems strange that Harris has survived the recent cull of managers in the EFL given the state of results.
Now Shorey has gone before him, could it be that Harris holds a financial stake in the club and is untouchable?

in theory yes, but when you’re a club that relies solely on free agents, and on the face of this season incredibly cheap free agents, it is hard to make a case for it being a worthwhile use of a wage. If the new owner wants to come in and spend then there will be more place for a deeper recruitment department.

We know who will be on a free transfer, youth targets, potential free transfers, potential mutual terminations, targets abroad (so studying stats and recordings in house), new loan targets. If you delve into the world of stats, find out injury records, pull up the vast data of likelihood of future injuries, recommendations, watching games in person and in house it'll be full time year round.

Our management team needs a big list of options as loads fall through. The more info we have the better we will be prepared.

If this isn't needed why have we failed so badly at signing and selling on players? Other clubs of our budget/stature have found gems and sold them on
