We are the Nearly Men at the moment. Moving in the right direction. I still have a feeling we are going to hammer an opponent soon though.
3-0 is well on the way to a hammering... i'd take a team of nearly men like that every week. and the second half was an improvement score-wise on the last two games.

Michael Appleton's record is interesting to date: P9 W2 D3 L4 F8 A8

In that time, we have played Rotherham, Sunderland, Portsmouth, Ipswich and Peterborough, five of the top sides in League One (plus 'Manchester United'). And the final game before he took over, we lost 6-0 at home.

So, we don't score many, and don't concede many - he has made us hard to beat, as he said he would. And if we can start converting a few more chances, it could be quite exciting again.
Yes indeed, take a look at those 5 names again .... top quality opposition (relatively speaking) who we have run very close.

Nearly men in the context of we needed 4. But like you say 3-0 is a pretty comprehensive win. Seems like we are getting a proper squad back in contention for places...

The received wisdom is that we've been playing better than results might suggest and against strong opposition.

Saturday becomes more of an acid test - Gills and us have identical records over the last 5 games and we should be aiming to translate that promise into a positive result. Such is this league, though, that its unlikely to be any easier, most of the 'weaker' sides still have some quality and a willingness to scrap for a result and we'll only really be making progress when we get the better of opposing teams on both counts.

Also helps to play the odd game at home!!

So many positives tonight, Freck and Coker getting 60, Pett playing 90, Connolly and Melbourne were superb at the back against their giant centre forward, two goals for Akinde including a penalty and another for Walker.
Bit unlucky not to get the fourth in injury time
Chapman and Grant were very lively throughout.
Smith had a good display between the sticks.
Only my second viewing of Appleton's imps and was another very promising performance and a lot of the squad players will have given food for thought after tonight.

making lots of decent chances, as well as scoring three.
hesketh had one at the end, walker from the grant freekick, walker mistimed his break away by a fraction, payne free kick, payne shot saved. grant through on goal and shot straight at the keeper.

pett back
freck back
coker back.

and kept a clean sheet.
lots of good signs in the way the team are playing.
The other player who's been out since early august is that long servant, Mr O G.
Could do with him back too ?

Slightly different formation with Frecks and occassionally Chapman bursting forward from midfield.
Could be a good option and give more strength/bodies in the middle of the park. We are also desperate for more goals from midfield at the moment.
Frecks needs to get up to full match fitness first - fair few fouls conceded last night and would clearly struggle in a faster league game.

Good night’s entertainment. Connolly was superb, didn’t rate him in midfield, but last night he was class, as has been said Melbourne had a good game along side him.

It will be interesting to see if Connolly starts against Gillingham instead of Bolger.

Pett looked lively for his first full game back. Sitting on the front row as apposed to upper 4 it was interesting to see how quick feet Payne has got.

Good to see big John get a couple and interesting to see Anderson run him self into the ground at right back, unfortunately at the end he started to make some defensive mistakes, probably because he was mentally and physically cream crackered.

Roll on next Wednesday

the usual hamstring tweak keeping him off the grass, plus a few soft tissue issues, other than that he should get on the pitch shortly and do the business on the blind side of the opposition`s defensive line........his goal tally a bit down on last seasons effort.

When you looked at the team sheet last night, it didn't look a bad second XI did it? Mostly square pegs in square holes (UNBALANCED SQUAD...!!!!!).

Missing Morrell, Lewis, Bostwick and Bolger as well.

It's a decent squad we've got, especially when most are available, which they seem to be now. Come this time next week, it might only be Bostwick left to come back in.

Hopefully when MApp recalls him, he doesn't get played in defence, its really not his best position.
