Covid Restrictions

You are spot on of course, also explains the rise going on in London and it's move to tier 2. However, it can also be no coincidence that Manchester, Liverpool and London were also the main hotspots some weeks ago for massive illegal raves and parties. Add to that football fans celebrating trophy wins and large demonstrations (one at the Nigerian embassy yesterday with 2000+ people crammed together on a pavement) and it was always going to be a recipe for disaster.
Social and economical problems play a massive part but so does behaviour and I don't remember Messrs Burnham and Khan having as much to say about those issues at the time.

Classic example and these students moaned that Police had "spoiled their fun". Thats a real 'WT actual F' moment.

Mass gatherings have made me wince from the start and they obviously have consequences, you are right. In some sense we are victims of our humanity and that won't change.

I do think some age and area specific messaging from credible individuals would be good. I know fellow pensioners who chatter endlessly about students, the young, mass gatherings but seem to exist in about two dozen bubbles where they meet up to socialise indoors.

I don’t often disagree with jogills on social or political issues (brexit aside) but still think that it’s 100% driven by personal choices and don’t believe that social deprivation is the driver.
A perfect example was yesterday and the protest about Nigeria .
It’s accepted that Black people are more at risk and yet thousands of young black people willingly congregated in the streets in protest.
Then got on busses, trains etc and went back to their families.
If mum or dad or granny now catches the virus, that’s not because of deprivation, it’s because of the actions of those who protested.
It is all about personal behaviour.

That word all is the problem for me. I won't defend mass gatherings and I can't imagine joining one. Many people have to work in conditions where they cannot maintain social distancing. Many of the same people live in crowded accomodation without their own facilities.

Some of them already suffer chronic conditions. It's not all about personal behaviour for them. It's about having very few choices and having to face more hazards than the rest of us. Such people are concentrated in large numbers in some towns and cities. That's why the levelling up agenda was even conceived for heaven's sake.

Northerners, Nigerians and students do not behave worse than the rest of us though some of them are as crazy as all the other risk takers.

That would make sense if figures were high in Medway as well. Rochester, Strood, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham all effectively stuck together on the map with a lot of social housing and what comes with it. Not mentioned as having high figures whereas Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells were until recently.

Could be down to commuting to and from the smoke but some people do that from the Medway towns as well.

It's more complicated than that GBN but if I had to make a crass generalisation Medway is way more affluent across the board than Stoke, Barnsley, Liverpool and others. There are pockets of deprivation all over but some towns have been going backwards for decades even in the boom years.

No it's not. I think that's been disproved (that BAME are more genetically susceptible to coronavirus)

It's been misleadingly portrayed like that on some platforms but is more complicated. The report found that deprivation across ethic groups was a more important factor. I think there are some differences between ethnic groups eg some South Asian people are much more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes and to developing it earlier.

One particularly shoddy report was headed
" Ethnic minority civic risk not down to racism".
A stupid click bait heading followed by far too little explanation and information.

I'm not a tory voter.

My only interest/annoyance is how you can predict someone's response to a government statement/policy by who they vote for. It's incredibly tedious especially when you can tell they haven't actually thought about the issue at hand and simply reverted to blind support or slagging off.

Just because you didn't vote for someone doesn't mean you have to say everything they do is wrong. Everyone gets more and more entrenched and views get more extreme (both left and right).

For fairness I have zero doubt that if the party in power was reversed we would have the exact same situation with bias.

'You' in this sense is a general you and not specifically you btw

I have and never will nail my flag to one party as to be honest I think they are all tossers and my 6 year old Grandson and class mates behave better than the Houses of Parliament at times.

i have always looked at my local MP and the Party manefesto to make my decision as to who I will vote for and have always spoken with my kids as to their choice their vote.

its about what’s happening here and now that counts and I am personally pleased with what our Government has implemented to date the thought of furlough and payments being made 12 months ago I would have laughed at.

for me I would like to see more unity throughout the UK, more working together to get us through this and some real British up and at them F### the rest mentality, but unfortunately it’s point scoring for Wales / Scotland have to do something different, the Mayor of Manchester who in MHO is just after career progression and the Civil Servants who piss cash down the drain like there’s and endless supply of the stuff,

let’s hope we have some unity going forward because I am sick of the selfish tossers who only care about themselves And F### eveyone else mentality.

It's not more complicated - the report said that someone's race specifically wasn't a factor in death rates. It was other factors (e.g jobs, deprivation etc) that were the reasons why BAME had higher death rates.

Your request for unity seems to be based on everyone agreeing with what the government are doing.

Completely disagree re Burnham btw. I voted for him ahead of Corbyn for Labour leader back in 2015. Light years more competent (not that it was hard to be).

Re Wales, Scotland and N Ireland, they are doing what they believe is best for their countries. They are hardly likely to deliberately not do what they believe is right just to be different.

As it happens, I think our government are doing what they think is best in an incredibly dìfficult situation. Sadly, I believe they are almost completely devoid of talent. A good example is Javid quitting because he didn't want to be Cumming's poodle. One of the few in the party to have talent and integrity. As I said, most of the other decent ones driven out last year.

As it happens I've heard plenty of complaints from people in the Labour party that Starmer isn't ripping into Johnson enough.

Agree re selfishness from some people but I believe most of the population are behaving well. A bit like yobby football fans giving the majority a bad name.

I'd just finish by repeating what one of Johnson's ex employers said of him last year (before this devatating crisis blew up). Johnson is unfit for office. A shame Hunt didn't win (even though he is more right wing).

Yet your idea of unity is disrupting everything the government are doing.
Not only doesn't it help to defeat the virus, it also causes unrest and mental anguish in the general population.
How am I disrupting (or perhaps you meant disputing) everything the Government is doing?

Wierd conclusion.

To disagree with some things causes anguish and unrest? That's an argument a dictator would use to supress opposition. Alternatively, are you saying don't question anything in case we upset their pretty little heads?

Ps, hope your missus is doing ok after her op earlier this year (iirc).

This virus will not go away easily, a two, three four week lock down will not make it go away.
a vaccine is what we need and god knows how long that will be, weeks months years.
in the meantime follow the guidance, as complicated at it my be for some, Social distance etc etc etc.
I go to work every day and have done continuously this year, I am temperture checked upon arrival, I do not share vehicles. Am given face masks when I Have to exit my vehicle and I work in teams that are not rotated. It works And so far haven’t missed a days work

I am not trying to make this political just want everyone to sign up to what we have here and work together.

that is not on the minorities agenda let’s put it that way

Agree. I'm not rebelling against what the government is asking of us. It is incredibly difficult to know which direction to take. We should all think of what is best for the population as a whole. I appreciate that I am in a far more comfortable situation than the vast majority of society.

That shouldn't mean we can't make constructive criticism though.

Why should you keep quiet when they are so bloody shambolic?

Guess you must go along with their argument against giving free school meals to the poorest kids. Oh well they are giving financial support in other ways.

Not only are they useless, they now seem politically inept: giving free school meals would have made been a win/win situation. It would have made them look caring and would have been comparatively cheap. Instead they have opened themselves to adverse criticism.

When they U turn on this, will you then save that this is the correct position and they were wrong previously (or would that be not pulling together if we comment)?

It is more complicated and you have simplified it to amplify your message. There are some differences, which can be attributed to ethnicity and which do mpact covid. Those factors are not the most important however as jobs, deprivation etc matter more. BAME death rates are affected by both those factors and others.

Not sure if this was me to reply!!!!

Free School meals should be available to those who need it without a doubt, and as stated before I have no political bias to any party, my only point was overall not as bad as some make out (with political agenda based arguments). Of course things could have been dealt with better especially with hindsight but no one saw this coming and it’s the “pathetic” criticism that winds me up.

Some criticism are valid and warranted

So can we agree that net immigration needs to be reduced to zero - so we have time to plan properly for new housing:
a) without persisting with high density developments (e.g. alongside railway into London)
b) spreading new houses around the country - along with improved road and rail links
c) thus reducing the harm of pandemics to poorer people "concentrated in large numbers in some towns and cities"
?
