Accrington v Gills

My mate and i (Gills fans from Edinburgh - long story!) are going to Accrington for this Saturday’s game.

I see from the forecast that it’s meant to be raining and from ASFC’s website that the away end is uncovered but away fans can use an area under a covered stand.

My question is; where will the Rainham End die-hards be?

Oh, and what boozer do we meet up in before game?

Cheers,
Steve

Depends what you mean by "Rainham end diehards". If you mean Gate 13 I assume you want to avoid them. In which case you may have to sit opposite, with the Accy fans.

Ive not heard about Gate 13 in the Rainham End for several years.

if they truly are Rainham End diehards they will be in the Rainham End overdosing on viagra.

There's always been a 'hard core' of fans who sit up the back of the stand at most away games and start most of the songs. Usually its at the back centre(ish), and you can tell when you come in the stadium where people are congregating. Thats been the case for about 20 years at away games as long as ive been going. So if thats what you mean by rainham end faithful, then thats your answer.

The make up of that group changes over time as fans come and go but there areca few long term members also. Unfortunately a large bulk of them these days are the younger, stone island clad 'gate 13' wannabes, who all seem to go to the same chavvy shops and that swear throughout the game. So i dont sit my boys near them. Im all for a bit of loose language at football but when its just pointless swearing constantly, i draw the line.

They all also seem to have the same opinion on scally. As soon as the team is losing they get excited and burst into anti scally songs. Anyone that tells them to shut up ends up being abused. Ive seen them fighting/arguing with one another or other fans regularly.

So the atmosphere can be good up there, and its where most of the songs start, but beware you may get bored of the anti-scally and mindless swearing from the young chavs. Or if thats your thing then crack on, even better for you!

The Gordon Road die-hards usually stand behind the goal at Accy ;). This Saturday will provide the first opportunity for Gillingham fans to try out the seating in the new Eric Whalley Stand (same price as the terrace) . Weather forecast is gloomy at present but there`s still time for the forecast to change. There`s no ticket price-hike on the day so it might be better to POTD, taking into account weather conditions. If I was going to be travelling all the way back to Kent via coach or public transport i`d deffo get a seating ticket rather than get soaked behind the goal.

The Crown pub is the place beside the entrance to the ground and is a friendly watering hole - away fans are welcomed - Accy fans are friendly.

The best one is the Peel Park Hotel a Victorian boozer, good ales and great pies. actually situated opposite the site of accys previous ground. Or the Victoria in Great Harwood has got a listed interior and 8 hand pumps but only really if you arrive in Lancs early

Just noticed that Chelsea is playing at Burnley tomorrow - 5.30pm k.o.

I mention that as a lot of away fans bound for Burnley choose Accrington as a pre-match drinking zone prior to the game so blue and white could well be construed as Chelsea - not that i`m suggesting hostilities (rather than Hostelries !), just saying.

Another option, that`s walkable to/from Accrington`s ground is the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, just off the M65 at Clayton Le-Moors. Nice bar (bit more expensive than pub outside ground - but not much more) and i`ve used it before, left my car there and walked to the ground (20 min walk).

Thanks for all the opinions and advice guys. Currently in a pub in Preston - toss up between Crown and Peel Park for us then as getting train.

Here’s hoping it’s 3 points in the bag for Gills...although I‘d take a draw given recent Stanley performance.

?? Everyone at Accrington Stanley has the upmost respect for the Gillingham fans that have made the long trip for this afternoon’s game!

? As a sign of appreciation, all away fans can claim a free drink, either hot or cold, by just showing your ticket at the kiosk.

Very generous of Accy. I shan`t be taking the ppp.. drink though.

Peter says we've weathered a storm -not a siege by any means- and we've gone from posing no threat whatsoever to posing a hint of a threat. Clearly great things await us in the second half.

It's been pretty gruelling to watch. Long periods of tedium punctuated by moments of terror. The first twenty minutes we matched them fairly well, but they made a couple of chances while we, as usual, made the square root of fuck-all. Then Accrington started getting on top, things started getting bad-tempered and disjointed, and we were all at sea.

We managed to steady things towards the end of the half, but we can be very thankful to still be on level terms. Again, I can't see where a chance, let alone a goal, might come from.

On that reading, with which I agree, we're nailed on to win this one.
