Anyway ask Alexa to sing an Aston Villa song, even she knows we are on the up
Morning 57, woke up this morning read your post, and asked my Alexa studio to play Aston Villa songs, and to my great amazement loads of our songs and chants are on there live, swearing and all. This is the Amazon Music version that claims to have 75 million songs on it.

No blame tonight. They clearly kept the kids off the pens and I would of done that too.
Not to sure why 19 yr olds can’t take penalties mate, Kylian Mbappe was winning league titles at 17 with Monaco, if they’re good enough they’re good enough, I‘m sure they’d of relished smashing one in at the Chelsea end, I know I would’ve at that age.

do you think Southgate was right to make Saka take a pen in the Euros?

The starting 11 did themselves proud however the performance helped to gloss over that in terms of experience and options, the bench was far too light.

Also, Martinez has played around 2 games in the last month so he needed match play, and had we had an Ings or Watkins on the bench who knows what may have happened and it certainly would have given us better options in a penalty shoot-out.

Next up for Chelsea is Man City but that didn't stop the irritating Tuchel from having a very strong and experienced bench and he even brought on prized asset Lukaku to win the game so of the two managers who took the match more seriously?

We aren't getting relegated and we aren't going to finish in the top six so why not have Watkins/Ings on our bench to help out when required like they did? To have won that game last night would have been a massive confidence lift for the players and supporters of our club but insted we talk about how close we were.

In black and white you either win or lose and personally speaking I don't take losing lightly and bollocks to all this "plucky" nonsense and clearly Tuchel thinks on them lines as well.

You play squad players and young up and coming youngters in the first few rounds (but not at Chelsea away) and the irony is in the later rounds you play your best players to stay in the bloodly thing!?........Madness to me anyway.

What? What does that even mean? I’ve no idea what Southgate‘s thought pattern was during the Euros, if you’re asking do I think a young player as as much chance of scoring as an older player then yes I do, if you’re asking should all young and up and coming players be spared taking a penalty then I’d call that bullshit, Archer played 90mins last night and scored a screamer, and scored a hatrick in his last cup game, so if you think he’s not upto taking a penalty then god only knows why he’s starting as our lead striker, if on the other hand he’s shite at taking penalties then of course he shouldn’t take one, but that’s not what’s being discussed here, so just because he’s 19! Sorry I don’t buy It.

15yr old boys died in battle in WWI, sometimes you just have to stand up and be counted, and as for Saka, the lads got balls for standing up, and for that I applaud him.

Im not sure you can expect a strong bench to a second string side. If you put first teamers on there you are suggesting the second string are not up to it. It should be how it was last night with a fair sprinkling of youth. They need to see there is a progression path at AVFC to make the youth scheme viable.

.

I did feel a tad let down with the weakness of the starting XI, I thought we should’ve at a minimum gone with 3 of the usual back 5. And absolutely, needed one of the key strikers on the bench - Ings would’ve been perfect to bring on to take a peno. We don’t have a particularly busy schedule over the next few weeks, yes United is a few days away but if we have aspirations of Europe we’ll be playing mid week and weekend, but with more travel involved.

There’s a huge difference between training sessions / development matches and the real thing, a cup game with thousands of fans and with a global TV audience. I don’t think the kids should have been forced to take one over the experienced players. I don’t think there’s an argument to be made that taking a penalty in a real game is anything like a training session which these kids have mostly only experienced before. So on that basis I’d say it would have been a risk to let them take one. Add to that think about what damage it could do to their confidence had they missed. Some of them are very much still only on the periphery of the squad so how long would it linger with them until they had a chance to “put it right” on the pitch, could be months until they start another game.

Confidence damaged! Well I’m sorry but if that’s the case then I believe they’re in the wrong fucking business, take a penalty if it goes in it goes in if not move on, you’ll learn and gain more experience, and if you’re confident in your own ability age is absolutely irrelevant, a 36yr old missed his penalty last night! maybe just maybe a young lad riding high on a great performance may have scored his spot kick and we’d still be in the competition, but I guess we’ll never know now, and this morning he’ll be happy knowing he didn’t miss a penalty I guess, or will he think ‘I could’ve scored last night’ 🤦🏻‍♂️

Wayne Rooney missed is first penalty kick at 20, funnily enough against us, didn’t knock his confidence, went on to score 48 more! 🤷🏻‍♂️

TBH I'd have had more faith in Archer or Bidace taking a pen than Marv. I like Marv but he hit the pen I'd imagine he'd hit, just the right height and power for the keeper to get a hand on,

Thats the weakness in Marv’s game, he doesn’t threaten a goal and because of that he rarely takes a shot, unlike Luiz.

I don’t think the young players should have been put on the spot,( no pun intended) , to take a penalty, but I’d like to think they we’re keen to go for it when the penalty takers were decided.

Thomas Holte is totally right here. I picked eight he would play before the game (not difficult!) the other three were Axel, Cash and Archer. Not a bad eleven at all but why no Watkins or Ings plus a couple of other of our go to’s on the bench like Tuchel had Mount and Lakaku? Crazy and unambitious. Chelsea are in 4 competitions yet still took a risk with players while we’re now down to two competitions. Poor show Dean and to further that argument no more games for the second stringers unless he throws them the FA Cup as well. We have to start thinking bigger.

I agree and am tired of this " it will damage their confidence" argument. There is so much competition to succeed in the prem on these young players and in order to be able to do so they need the skills, physical fitness and mental strength. If they are worried that missing one penalty will shatter their confidence to such an extent that it will harm their careers, then they should forget about progressing and give up. This isn't for the weak.

Isn’t that contradictory though? If they are keen to take them, then why not let them, if senior players are higher up the penalty list then obviously they’ll have to wait.

But I think the ones who think ’let’s save them from the sheer horror if they miss‘ are missing a certain point, because if it gets to 5-5 on penalties their turns coming! confidence bashing or not they’re taking one.

What next take them off at 75mins so they don’t miss a sitter in injury time in front of the Holte and damage their confidence, these are professional footballers playing a game that revolves around hit and miss.

My Son went in the Royal Navy at 16 to serve his country, and became a warfare specialist, and some on here are worried about young 17,18,19yr old professional footballers missing a penalty 🤔 fuck that I’m out, never heard as much nonsense in all my life.
