LIncoln Late 1980s and Early 1990s

I can’t remember the last time I came to Lincoln centre I reckon at least 4 years it not 5. I am sure it wasn’t there then. Was that where the theory test place was?

Thinking about it I think my last trip to the bank was kidderminster at home when Sam Yorke was playing. I bet I don’t recognise the place.
Not sure. When I took my theory test back in the 80s it was held in the car I'd driven my test in and was outside the driving test centre in Proctor Road, off Outer Circle Road. I was asked 5 questions, but as my mind had gone a blank after the effort of the test I think I got most wrong. The examiner took pity on the gibbering wreck that I was and as I has driven well said not to worry, he would pass me any way! How times change.

Had a lunch time walk round this area today. Couldn't find any sign of the mural, so it looks like it got demolished during some phase of the renovation of the area.

oh I see that’s a shame i remember it brightened up a drab car park, that hole area has changed beyond recognition.

Today's pics continue the theme of Brayford Wharf East. Situated on the corner of Brayford Wharf East and St Marks Street was (sorry Knotty) the Lincoln Corporation/City of Lincoln bus garage. On the side of the back wall was the slogan "Wilson Out", as can be seen in one of the photos. I often wondered if the person who daubed that is the same one that wrote the slightly sinister message on the wall of the West Bank at Sincil Bank. There was another bit of graffiti on a wall in the Firth Road area that screamed "Yanks Get Out of Vietnam", or something similar. Anyone remember those two political statements (the Sincil Bank graffiti has been covered previously on a couple of other threads)? The last photo shows what has replaced the garage.

I remember that wall now it was very anger in style and was in white paint. It was there well into the 90s as I remember when we went to the post office near the back of the cinema.

I reckon that bus depot was a health hazard when you walked past the open door the fumes were so strong mixture of nasty diesel emissions and oil. Lovely

Here's a somewhat older picture (late 1960s) taken in the same location as the first one of those.

Great photo. Those were the buses I remember using as a child. As well as being a lighter green than the Road Car buses, the Corporation buses seemed to have leather (at least I think it was that) covered seats rather than the upholstered/fabric seats of the Road Car buses. Me and my mates used to get the No 7 Corporation bus back to Hykeham. It used to go along Hykeham Road, then turn round at Highfield Terrace, where Kaberrys is these days. The bus stop was just inside the North Hykeham boundary. It was years before it was allowed to pick up on Dore Avenue, which saved me a walk of all of 50 yards.

It was all shiny and new in the 1960s, and I still find it difficult to realise it's not all still there.

I used the cafe more often than I got a bus from there - it was my regular post-match port of call to have a cheese roll and cup of tea while reading the Football Echo and waiting for the train home from St Marks station.

Knowing I was a regular match-goer, occasionally someone would ask me how City had got on. Glad to say someone did after a certain Bournemouth match in 1982 and I was able to say, "We won (pause) - 9-0".

Here's another photo from me from the early 1960s. It must have seemed a long way to London on one of those:

I'm guessing this is the café you used to use?

One last one from St Marks before returning to St Marks Street tomorrow.

The bus about to go to St Giles is what was known as a Road Runner. As well as Road Car's Road Runners, the City of Lincoln buses ran a fleet of taxi cabs that would go to certain parts of the city and could, if I remember rightly, be flagged down on request. I quite enjoyed a trip into town in one of them now and again.

A few more of the old Corporation/City of Lincoln bus garage today, followed by a few pics today which show the scale of change in this area. Completely unrecognisable!20210415_173709 (2).jpg20210415_173721 (2).jpg20210415_173734 (2).jpg

Have you got any showing Curtis's bacon factory? Is it still there - I can't remember. This is from 2006. I remember in the 1960s and possibly into the 1970s the semi-wooden shack at the side of it was a barber's shop.

Checked through my pictures and couldn't find one of the factory, but that may be because a few have been lost through various house moves over the years. as Knotty said, the building is no longer there and is now student accommodation.

Today's pictures mainly show the old Hercock & Son warehouse that used to be on the corner of Brayford Wharf East and Wigford Way. One pic shows what was then the offices of General Accident. Following on are a few photos taken today which show what the site looks now. The flats are called Grantavon House, and are in private ownership rather than student accommodation.

Time now for a little bit of Pearl and Dean half-time entertainment. Today's pics show the front of the old St Marks train station, before heading down Firth Road. The next few days pics will concentrate on that area. Enjoy, if that's the right word!

At least some of the scaffolding propping up the portico (if that's the word I want) was there while the station was still in use.
