These days the phone companies just sell it on.

Not used our landline in about a decade, so when a number is needed we give that - yet strangely, despite only using the missus' mobile number for 'official' stuff, she still gets spam calls.

If both of our assumptions are correct here based on what has been reported, I actually feel slightly sorry for Songo'o - it sounds like he was stitched up and was dumb enough to fall for it.

So here is my guess at what has happened .
Respected , well liked teacher who loves his job shows cartoon of the prophet Mohammed in an RE lesson . He shows it in teaching about the implications of such things in relation to Charlie Ebdo and the offence it causes and the reasons why and what can occur . No more , no less. Not intended to cause offence , just an important lesson to young people, black, white , religious or non religious.

And here is what has happened.
Offence is taken, teacher is suspended , teacher has death threats forcing him to move out of his home with his family. Muslims protest outside the school forcing it to close and the 650 odd pupils are denied their education. Headmaster apologies unequivocally.

And now parents are saying this lesson showing the cartoon has been going on for 2 years , pupils were told they could leave the class if they didn’t wish to see the cartoon. And thousands signing a petition to reinstate the teacher.

The end result division caused between the muslim and non -Muslim community all because the default now whoever you are, whatever the topic is to protest, demonstrate and stamp feet.

Does no one actually fcuking talk anymore .

Oh and screw the pandemic (again)

I heard it reported on a news channel today that there were no parents taking part in the demos outside the school.
Speaks volumes.

While i totally agree this is ridiculous and insane and just shows how upside down our world is....
With the issues in france surrounding a cartoon of 'mohammed i think the teacher was a tad silly, maybe naive.
But the Head of Department who would have put the scheme of work together should also maybe of had a word and said 'mmmm maybe not'
Yes i agree though. Its crazy and no doubt the teacher would have been doing it with good intentions. But in hindsight, maybe a very silly thing to do.

But then how do you teach about the issue without showing what it actually is.
Its like teaching sex education without showing what goes where or more seriously about the Holocaust without the pictures .

I get the offence but maybe by showing it would actually help the Muslim community be reassured that the youngsters understand the issue it causes for them rather than leaving to the imagination.

It goes deep into SOME Muslim ideologies.
Try teaching sex education at a Muslim school... either the parents will keep them off that day or they will not consent to it.
You cannot pursuade SOME parents out of it at all.
You could teach about the navy seals killing osama bin laden. History right... but you probably wouldnt show what his face looked like after 3 bullets going through.
I know for us... it only a cartoon.... but for SOME muslim families it would be ultimate disrespect.

I actually agree with you. I agree with what you are saying. I am coming from an education point of view. And education these days in poison.
 
I take your point Melon, but I don't think you need to show an image to make that point for religion. At best any image is only a third party representation anyway and we don't use caricatures to cover the holocaust or Viz characters to teach sex ed lol

If school's did a lesson on censorship you wouldn't expect beheading videos or show them death row sentences being carried out or extreme porn to prove the point of why these aren't shown in full on TV etc.

You're not allowed any images of the Prophet at all in their belief Cartoons are taking the piss but they don't even allow a serious drawing or artwork depicting Muhammad, although it doesn't prohibit them in the Quran. Mrs57 has a copy of the Quran next to the Bible in one of our book cabinets. She has read both, I once read a copy of the Beano

Yup if it was accepted 'an' official image could be used, people would simply use that and there would be no offence issue, but it's one of those 'it has been read this way' lines in the Quran where not everyone actually agrees - much like plenty in the Bible and others.

Preferred the Beano myself as well.
 
Yes . Understand both of those posts @mike_field and @colavfc . Difficult for a complete non believer in religion (like I am) to understand the anger. But I think the point remains that misguided, misunderstood or naive , whatever you want to call it, it appears that the teacher is trying to educate and not at all offend .

It’s so zero to hundred nowadays. How about someone from the Muslim community, a leader just goes into the school and sits down and has a conversation and explains and educates . But no let’s go straight to protest . Same as any topic nowadays it seems.

And on that, I cannot disagree matey.

The fact I've read the school is just over 60% BAME anyway, I struggle to imagine the teacher was trying anything other than trying to bring non Moslems up to speed on why it's a contentious point ala Hebdo. It was just simply a bit innocently naive but that in no way deserves the reaction it has got.

Simple fact is, no laws were broken and as Stephen Fry pointed out - you have a right to be offended and offend, but not a right to have anything done other than moving on from the offence unless it's criminal. This to me ticks that box perfectly because it's highly unfortunate more than anything else.

If I thought it was anything more I'd expect the book to be thrown...but I genuinely don't believe there is anything more here and again, whilst people fixate on this, I'm pretty sure there are more deserving issues that should be being addressed, but aren't.

So it serves no one.
 
It sounds to me like a teacher went looking for trouble and didn't like it when he found it. The only reason to show that cartoon is to cause offense.

All very childish really he does that and outcome the idiots to protest, wouldn't it be great without religion. It's served its purpose ie keeping the people in check for a couple of thousand years and now it's doing the opposite. Christianity seems to have moved forwards but Islam is still in the dark ages of 800 years ago but living in 2021 in the western world
