Winter Transfer Window Thread

I read somewhere that you can now have as many loanees as you like in the squad, but a maximum of 5 on the pitch at once. Is that correct?

I believe it is 5 in the match day squad of 18. Squad as such no limits
That said there has been so many changes just for this season which haven't been widely reported (like the rule that you can play for 3 teams in a season for this one only rather than the usual 2) it could well be anything

Michael Mancienne anyone?

Hortin seemed to suggest one could cover at right back and defensive midfield (positions he can play) and the other being an attacker. Plus he said that these would be signings that are to hit the ground running and not with a view for next season.

A little bit more experience/quality for the second half of the season would be welcome. Obvious links with Bridcutt from Chelsea and Forest. We’ll see!

His lack of games is a worry for me - 31 since 2018 (according to wiki), fans of his MLS club don't hold him in high regard and he kind of goes against the grain of this squad in terms of age profile, athleticism and energy.

If it is Mancienne, I think we just need to view the judgment of the club, they haven’t done too badly at getting the right players in so far have they! I agree he might not have had the best provenance from some former fans, but he would add a lot of experience and cover several positions. I guess we will soon find out, but in Clive, Jez, Michael and others, we certainly should trust.

Recruitment has been spot one no doubt about that. I am just surprised this guy is linked as it's the a way away from how the squad has been built.

These seem the obvious areas. There was a bit of chat about Bridcutt on the match thread pre-match. The evidence is starting to suggest that he's a big miss especially against rivals so an experienced alternative to him would be high on my list and I think we miss Hopper when he's not available.

We don't have lots of cover but we do have lots of flexibility in most other areas.

Agree. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with him coming to us. You can bet your life that a contract would be short term, and well weighted towards game time.
At this time the last thing we need is to replace Bridcutt with a young lad that is new to the role. Surely, an older head to play the odd game is the right move. That deep lying midfield role is so important to how we play, we should have as good a back-up as we can for the remainder of the season.
As for his fitness? MA doesn't look like a fella that doesn't physical condition seriously.

With the rumour on here about Mancienne training with us from one or two posters, then Gary running a ‘trialist rumour, who might be in the frame from the US‘ blog, being one of the ones listed, I think it’s looking more and more likely.

2 possibilities - either it's rubbish or we have made a short term tweak to the plan as we are in such a good position.
The latter I think, and maybe a little because we can't necessarily get our summer targets now. I'd say given our position, a couple of bodies who're ready for this season makes sense if that's the line we're doing down.

As mentioned, we miss Bridcutt's bit of bite when he's not in the side, especially against the top sides so that area of DM/RB makes sense if we can sign someone in a similar mould i.e. experienced and we also miss Hopper so whether that's the type of attacker, who knows - although given that we've got a plethora of wide players...

I suspect Edun's improvement in recent weeks has shifted MA's focus away from there (unless he sees the other two positions as more of a priority). I was expecting an LB to come in and Melbourne to head out tbh.

Mancienne isn't really a Bridcutt type though, he's much more of an out and out centre half rather than a defensive midfielder. Whilst a utility player in his younger years he's played exclusively as a CB whilst in the MLS and played 316 minutes throughout 2020 with his last appearance 11 months ago. Perhaps the thinking would be Lewis go into CDM if needed or a CDM would complement Mancienne. I agree a back up for Bridcutt is needed to see us through.

Mancienne was a very stylish youngster and definitely can cover right back. If his legs haven't gone he is quality at our level.

I have previously wondered about Montsma playing the CDM role as he has many of the attributes to play there. The fact he is well over 6 feet tall will always make his primary role a centre back but I wouldn't bet against him being an awesome understudy for Liam Bridcutt if Jackson and Walsh keep their shirts.

We'll see in the next couple of days what happens, might be completely wide of the mark. There are barely any transfers rumours these days as Appleton seems to do his business very privately, which is great for the club but not for us gossipers!

monster could stand in at dm, rb, or centre forward - but he hasn't been tried or tested in any of those positions. right now he will be the best player in the squad to not be getting a game, but it is hard to drop walsh or jackson, assuming jackson is now fit enough to play three games a week.
with those three, cb is the area where we are strongest imo.

the main positions for me are: a specialist dm (bridcutt has already missed games on three separate occasions in 23 games, plus the possibility of a three match suspension hovers around him),
and i have been saying we need back up/competiton for hopper all season.

also, if the board are really beginning to see promotion as a strong possibility, and last night's result adds weight to this - i wouldn't be surprised if we signed cover/competition in the fullback positions. worth noting that the method of signing squad cover was used at this time in the previous two championship winning seasons.

Unless you mean Lewis, as in the tall good looking Dutch lad, I think you're wrong. If you haven't noticed, MA has made it abundantly clear that Lewis, the Welsh RB that only plays for Wales, is as near to his plans as you and I.

If you can play cf, I would put you higher in ma’s plans than Lewis)))

Personally I don't think Mancienne's lack of starts for previous clubs is a problem. Instead I think that is exactly what we need - two squad players who can step in and do a job when necessary.

I really don't think any of the 11 that started last night, plus Jones, Montsma, and Anderson, deserve to be replaced by a new signing. Additional depth for the run in is fine though - as long as they are considered an upgrade on Gotts and Elbouzedi.

As a player without a club I believe that Mancienne could be signed after the deadline so perhaps our net is being cast elsewhere first
