Ollie Gunar can't, many others have tried and failed. Tuchel (don't like him) made a significant change at Chelsea with the same players last season, so I rate him.

TBF we still don't know Dean Smith's ceiling. Personally, I think he has the ingredients this season, let's see what he does with them when they're all fit. Can still come 6th-8th IMHO IF we start playing to our potential. Seen teams come from behind with a run of games season after season.

Question is will he hit his ceiling before he falls through the floor? :halo:

klopp not a 'chequebook' manager after only spending £600 mill for their one title ? hmm ok.
Some players get better altho if you wanted to argue the toss that could be down to simply gaining more experience or whoever the current 'specialist' coach might be. Many stay much the same and some remain pish - I sure we could pick some duffers on recruitment as well - Hi Wes.

I'm fairly agnostic on his abilities but progress and results will ultimately decide his fate. So far we've made progress year on year. Might have a job holding onto him if the barcodes come calling tho ?

It depends on how you count it. Liverpool's net spend is really low because they have been able to sell really well. Over the past 5 seasons their net spend is half of ours.

Klopp doesn't even sign the players, Liverpool's moneyball system is widely known and understood, so to talk about Klopp as a chequebook manager is completely moot. This isn't the 1990s anymore.

For me the difference is how well are you spending the money and how often do you rip things up and start again. Liverpool has had gradual progression IMO. Pep just kept buying defenders, all to replace one player he didn't even buy himself (Kompany). $500MM+ later he has a fantastic defence. Klopp went and bought a whole team for that as well as improving the team after making a record sale.

Apart from his first summer, the club made strategic purchases IMO. Due to injuries, he has tried a different system but the form of some players doesnt merit persisting with the 3-5-2. We should go back to 4-3-3 even if it means shoehorning Watkins wide left, moving Emi2 wide right and leaving Ramsey back in the starting lineup. Its kind of come down to starting Hause/Axel or starting Ramsey. Our weak links kind of inform our team selection and given the likes of Targett and Watkins are also playing poorly I think we need to change.

In defence of Smith I don't think some of the players are fully focused on villa anymore. It's more country before club.
Yeah, think you're right mate. This is an ongoing problem that you get when buying foreign players. It's particularly noticable with the South American players, because of the long distances and time zones involved.I see that Wenger is having video calls with the four home countries managers today, re bi annual World Cup, so they haven't given up on it.

I don't necessarily think they're not fully focused on Villa it's just that their natural national pride is very important to their mindset. To them its a privilege to represent your country unlike English players who seem to think its an inconvenience. Just look at the pride Scottish and Welsh players show when playing for their nation. If English players showed the same passion and commitment then we'd of probably won something by now.
An example of this is players being "injured " when the international breaks come up but are miraculously fit for their club side.

And let’s look at the battle of words Douglas had with a Brazilian reporter over the size of Aston Villa. Didn’t have to say anything, wasn’t widely reported here, but he felt he had to defend our club. Let’s be careful about misrepresentations to make a point.

The Sky6 clubs have more control over their players than us unfortunately. I get the distinct impression we are afraid to piss anyone off. Same applied to Joe YKW who did what the fuck he wanted for years without ramifications

All players want to play for their country. Gives them far more recognition than playing for any club, recognition which will last a life time. Look how Snake2 lapped up the cheers he was getting from England supporters.

Funny. Could have sworn Smith said that players going to South America had the clubs blessing albeit naturally they wanted them to stay but understood the players requests.

Weird how things are twisted to suit an agenda.

That would be in his private life, yet people complain about somebodies private thoughts being aired when NOT representing their employer?

The 2 Argies were already on a private jet and airborne when the club rushed a statement out. Let's not be naive here.

What I like about SMith is he's not trying to make excuses, or cover his own back like a lot of managers do.

Just seen an interview with him where he says he's had tremendous backing and now has a swuad that should be finishing in the top half of the league. Big statement and one that he as manager will now live or die by as if we don't he can't blame the squad, he'd have to shoulder responsibility.

He's covering his back by saying top half when we should be talking about pushing for Europe and competing for a cup. Textbook expectations management. Neil Warnock could get this squad into the top half.
