Against Croatia it made sense to mitigate Modric who is a maestro of the game. To play 2 defensive midfielders again McGinn… as much as I like him he ain’t that fucking good.

What’s to say had we had not played 4-1-3-2 we wouldn’t have beaten Croatia 3-1?

Croatia are average, they aren’t the same side as 2018.

I wouldn’t have gone two holding players unless we play a top nation in a knockout and even then I’d think about it.

We can’t win tournaments from set pieces, and unless we change we’ll always be losers in these tournaments.

The few times Jack was able to get the ball and run at people he just had every English player standing like statues around him as uf they didn't know what to do if the ball wasn't coming slowly towards them sideways.

No matter the year or the manager England always look so rigid and clueless at these tournaments. There are some very good players in that group and Southgate is going to completely waste them.

Final thought. Sterling is just Sean Wright-Phillips but managed by the best coach in the world at club level. Pep knows exactly how to get the most out of his limited ability but its tricked people into thinking he's more than he really is. Stick Grealish in that man city side and they will improve. Stick sterling in for Villa and we and him are infinitely worse off.

Souness bang on.

’England were not that good against Croatia’
We all said the same thing on here. The disappointment of not seeing Grealish in the first game meant I didn’t get carried away with the win - Phillips and Mings were excellent but the rest were piss poor and it was a scuffed shot which a half decent keeper should have saved which was the only difference. It was obvious that Southgate wouldn’t change things after we won and up against a team with some energy showed how rank average we are under Southgate

Southgate's boss, the Football Association loves him and not for the first time, won't take a risk in appointing a good manager who will inspire the players to play well for England and the manager's trust in them.

Southgate has been a failure in everything he has done in his career within football management and yet he somehow gets to manage the England national team. His negativity stinks the place out and that is seen in the overly cautious way England plays.

They say a team reflects a manager on the pitch and that's certainly true in this case.

Can you seriously see that with any other top football team in Europe or organisation in charge?

It won't change until major reorganisation is put in place but you know that will never happen as they fight tooth and nail to protect themselves at the Football Association Ivory Towers.

Same with Foden, I said the other day Foden wouldn't be able to carry Villa as Jack does.

An argument which has been raised for over 50 years. Not going to end anytime soon.

Although it wasn’t in our favour, VAR didn’t even look at the supposed foul on Sterling. I like hearing that, VAR is killing the English game, seems to work much better on the continent
But it just sums up how pathetic we were that the best our main attackers can come up with us throw themselves to the floor and hope they get a dodgy pen. But to be fair why wouldn’t they try that with how ridiculous the refs are in this country - difference is tonight the refs aren’t there to deliberately help them out

Indeed, stone wall penalty for Citeh that would’ve been
