Summer transfer thread

Just had a quick look at him, he started his senior career in Belgium second tier before moving to Portugal for a couple of second tier sides there. He made a good 100 or so appearances by the time he was in his early 20's at those 3 clubs but his goals and assists weren't anything to shout about.

But since moving to Zamalek in Egypt about 4 years ago he's had a 1 in 2 goal contribution record (33 goals, 22 assists in 101 league games according to Transfermarrkt.com).

Considering we've been so conservative in the market so far, paying 2.6m for one player from Egypt would seem a big gamble. I'd never heard of him before so maybe this lad is a genuine world beater and he's worth every penny, but at the same time any player coming in from a foreign league adapting isn't a given so you would wonder if that huge chunk of our budget could be spread out over a few good players domestically. If there is any truth in the story in the first place. Unless we believe there is some type of significant commercial value in signing an Arabic player that would help to recoup the outlay for him. In which case - that makes a lot more sense.

For anyone interested in some clips of what he's like.

A fellow latic's fans son is a translator and a fluent Arabic speaker, he sent the article to his son to see if it was correct, he said that the translation was badly done and misleading, the figure of 57 million Egyptian pounds is incorrect and actually reads 5-7 million which means the figure is just over 300k and not £2.45 million based on the wording of the translation.

Much less of a risk if that’s the case and sounds like a no-brainer

300k sounds a lot more realistic and worth the gamble. There's a lot of untapped talent in leagues like Egypt so well worth trying to explore it if it's affordable.

It seems reading on twitter that this is a formal double swoop for Sayed and Gad, its being reported we have triggered the release fee for Sayed and met the asking price for Gad.

I was looking at the process for getting a work permit for Gad.

If we got him and loaned him to Scotland, they are a band 3 league, so he gets 8 points out of 15 to play in that league, then he'd need to play 80%+ of their games to get the remaining points to get a permit for January. So there is the risk that if he lost his place for any reason while on loan we may end up in a position he still couldn't get a permit. So that is still a risk even if we've got a willing SPL side.

There is an appeal process where if you can demonstrate that the player is worth coming over despite not meeting the criteria you can get an exception. We would obviously argue there is only 1 goal keeper spot available every game and there are 2 senior established keepers battling it out for that position so his chances of getting international games is near impossible but his quality is shown by the fact he's been away with the squad every time as 3rd choice. If we could persuade a panel that the number of times he's been called up rather than just looking at caps should be taken into account for a young goal keeper we'd probably be able to get him without sending him to Scotland. Trying to take myself out of our position and look at it neutrally i think that is a reasonable argument but it would be down to a 3 person panel to decide if that was justifiable or not.

Looking at the news around Gad,

- The player himself confirmed we made an offer and he wants to come. He is frustrated that the offer hasn't been accepted and he says the club are ignoring his requests to leave. He also confirmed the potential plan to go on loan to Scotland for 6 months to get a work permit for England. Or even stay at ENPPI for a year.

- His father has spoken in the press critasising ENPPI for not accepting the bid.

- Gad has been fined by his club for talking to to the press about it.

- ENPPI President confirms that we have made an opening bid but it doesn't match their valuation. But they will continue to speak with us - so it sounds like they are open to doing the deal and it's just agreeing a fee.

Egyptian press have speculated about the fee, but i don't think anyone directly involved has mentioned it.

It's clearly not just a rumour at this point.

Well if it's a choice between the keeper and the winger, you get the winger all day long. Not only is that position more important in terms of what we need, if this Zizo is a regular starter for the national team then he will automatically pass for work permit, unlike the keeper.

Always hard work bringing in these sort of players work permits language Scoring goals in Egyptian league be nothing like the championship ship. Would be better if he came with some one else
UK market is saturated so clubs have no choice but to diversify. Norwich signed someone from Chile who made his debut Saturday and looked arguably their best player.

To be fair we’ve done well with Egyptian players -Zaki, Mido, Morsy. At 300 grand seems a punt worth taking given his highlights reel.

However the squad is no longer full of varying nationalities, so adapting to a new country is still a challenge and perhaps the biggest hurdle as opposed to actually playing the game.

1.8 million not 300k

Thought the article was misquoted and it was 300 grand for Zizo?
Not gonna lie, 300 grand sounds totally unrealistic for a regular international and top scorer of a top level domestic league in its respective country. 1.8 million sounds a lot more realistic, not cheap but in 2022 not massively expensive either.

Plus that info comes from Loudmouth Blue. Say no more...

Happy we have signed Broadhead, know a few Sunderland fans who have said good complimentary things about his time there last season and are disappointed we have got in there ahead of them for him this season.

Im wondering with Zizo if our interest in him is concrete if we could use him as an right wing back. As i suspect we will switch to wingbacks some time soon to fit Broadhead in and pair him up in a two up front formation with either Lang or Keane.

Nyambe can be used as a defensive wingback in a three at the back formation as a more defensive option and can also play as a right sided centre back in a three.

I concur too with the others on the board who have mentioned our interest in the two Egyptian players. If its a choice between Gad a keeper and Zizo a right sided player, 100 per cent go for Zizo and end the interest in Gad. More chance of a work permit, fee in GBP when converted if its 300k is realistic and keeper isnt an urgent necessity atm. However another attacking right sided option is. Someone who can be used as an attacking wingback in a 3 man defensive formation or a right winger in a 4 man defensive formation.

Another body in centre midfield is a necessity too i think with Cousins injury so hope we are working on something there. Maybe a loan till January? Id hope one of the signings we make is a permanent one and not a loan, want to keep some loan spots free for the January window.
