Real Madrid-Manchester City Champions League Post Match Thread

Kane and city would have done better this season together for the price quoted. With his experience and service we couldn have changed some results for pep. I know 100 mill spent is for future , but we need quick results for the days like yesterday.

Just caught the replay on a decent sized screen …….JG so nearly got us over the line but for some good defending and the length of Courtois’ studs :shake:

But it feels like a total stitch up now what with the failure to deal with Casemeiro’s two poor fouls on Foden and KDB plus it seems Dias definitely gets the underside of his boot on the ball when he tackles Benzema and VAR should have over ruled the decision. Bit the officials bottled it (where have we seen that before ). and it feels like UEFA will always find a way to deny this club the Champions League. Same way they failed to send off Rudiger in last year’s final.

I hope they only get the Mickey Mouse Cup, more than 1 pot, and it will be a nightmare in the media for weeks.
They will probably be hailed as “Immortal“ whatever their final tally becasue they will push the narrative that “no club EVER got closer :blah::blah:“. Remember when they lost the league after getting 99 points…..THAT was the headline.

It is still a wonder that whenever we were in the running for 4 trophies it was always used as a stick to beat is with and a reason to question the legitimacy of our spending on players.

Casemiro could easily have been dismissed in the first half against Manchester City for two cynical fouls on Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.

We can argue that if he was booked for one, he might not have made the other, but the fact is he wasn't shown a yellow card for either.

Referee Daniele Orsato seemed intimidated by the Bernabeu and the fame of the team he was handling. Well, one of them at least.

He wasn't the reason Madrid won, but he certainly helped.

I’m trying to purge this disaster from my monkey mind. What’s done is done, but this one has a special kind of hurt.

Pep Guardiola on what he's told his players after they lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final: "Nothing. No words can help to feel what we all feel. Just time, sleep as best as possible and think of the next target. On Saturday, we'll be together and talk about who we are as a team and what we've done to get to the semi-finals of the Champions League. These are the moments I am most proud to be here."

At minute 120, the officials added just three minutes after a heavily disrupted second half.

And their claim is a legitimate one, with Mundo Deportivo doing the research and finding out that only five minutes and 32 seconds were played out of the 15 minutes of second half extra time.

And not only that, but the full-time whistle was blown after just over two-and-a-half minutes of added time.

Small details, but this game tends to be won on small details.

Man City were right to feel hard done by with added time (football-espana.net)

Australian Rules football has an independent timekeeper to ensure fairness to both sides, even at the junior level. There is no doubt there used to be Fergie time, which shows how weak some refs are.
we are way behind the times and have our head stuck up the arses of these Old School Clubs running (Ruining) football

After Frank Lampard’s goal against Germany in the 2010 WC (see below) Blatter and FIFA continued to resist the calls for the introduction of any technology to assist the officials in making their decisions. We all know why. But eventually the strength of argument became too strong and we have the goal line tech (watches) - let’s not go down the rabbit hole of VAR here.

This technology works because it is based on something empirical. The same can be said for an independent time keeper who simply has to stop the clock whenever the ball leaves the furled of play and when it re-enters. This cannot be affected or influenced by the crowd.

It makes sense…….but there would be strong forces opposing it. Because of ‘Fergie time’.

What annoys me is the offside VAR decisions which are really close and are still subjective just like penalties, both of which are not yes of no because the controversy still remains for both issues and I do not understand why when they are so close that all decisions should be based on feet unless eg the a goal is scored immediately by part of the body which is clearly offside and eg here a header.

previously any hand ball was called unless it was the Dips who are apparently allowed to have your arms out wide and still be classed as by your side ffs.

The decisions that grind my gears (as well as the way VAr still seems so arbitrary in its use) are the “only flag when the move is completed. Players that are CLEARLY offside are STILL not flagged until after the move is ‘completed’ …..by which time a defender or keeper could make a challenge in which they suffer an injury in order to prevent an outcome that would not have counted. Drives me crazy :taz:

KippaxBlue's thoughts on City's astonishing departure from the Champions League;

Real Madrid 1-3
Unbelievable! After it looked like City were going through to the final when the Mahrez goal had put them two goals up Real Madrid were able to equalize in added time and then in extra time a penalty settled the battle in Real's favor.
As expected City made several changes from the Leeds match and it was good to see Walker back.

After a quiet start we almost had a boxing match on 8 minutes. It did not last for long and in the end both Laporte and Modric got yellow cards. On 14 minutes De Bruyne takes a pass from Foden and shoots but the ball goes straight at the keeper. 5 minutes later Courtois is in action again - this time he has to make a good save from Benardo. A few minutes later an effort by Jesus goes wide and at the other end a foul by Rodri ends with a corner which is headed clear by Walker.Alas Walker was injured but he was back on after treatment. Five minutes before the break Foden has a shot saved. So at half time it is goalless.

On 49 minutes Jesus has a go from a narrow angle but straight at the keeper. Then on 65 minutes De Bruyne is badly fouled by Carvajal who gets a yellow card. a few minutes later Walker limps off and is subbed by Zinchenko. In addition Kevin De Bruyne who has not been at his best is subbed by Gundogan. How important will these changes mean!

On 74 minutes City broke and a good pass from Benardo found Mahrez who lashed the ball past Courtois to give City the lead -surely game over! It was a cracking goal and he was the first City player to score 7 goals in a single Champions League season. A few minutes later Grealish comes on for Jesus and later he is brought down by Militao who is yellow carded. With two minutes to go Grealish has a couple of good chances - one is brilliantly cleared off the line and the second goes just wide.

Alas just on time Rodrygo takes a pass from Benzema and scores from close range. One all - oh dear the ref has given 6 extra minutes -surely not that much!

In the first minute of added time Real Madrid scored again and it was Rodrygo again -this time with a header. Unbelievable! two goals in 2 minutes. So now we have to suffer extra time!

Disaster in the first three minutes - Dias brings down Benzema in the penalty area and Benzema takes the kick -sends Ederson the wrong way and Real Madrid win 3-1 and go through to play Liverpool in Paris in the final.

The only City player to give 100% was Benardo Silva - would City have done better had Walker been able to stay on and De Bruyne had been on the ball. We shall never know!

Now Pep has to get the players back to top level for the remaining League games starting with the home game against Newcastle U on Sunday.
