Police Presence

Anyone else think that was way OTT today ?

Hate to think what they cost us. It wasn't to police any potential issue with Sunderland fans either as they were lined up outside the medway stand after the game.

The Rainham end concourse had a crazy number of police at half time

Hearing bad things about the factory at half time. Anyone on here use it ? Prefer first hand reports.

Real waste of police resources.

I would guess the club got wind of the protesters plans it would not be difficult know doubt stuff was said on social media somewhere. In view of clear friction with the Rainham end I would argue that the Police presence was probably understandable.

I was queuing up to get into the Factory at half time as it was one in, one out before I gave up. During that time two lads came out singing Scally about but were collared within seconds. They weren’t escorted out but were spoken to before the gates. I gave up and got a pint the other side of the concourse.

Then police came through in waves. Obviously I don’t want people dragged out just for singing Scally Out, but I saw individuals gathering the lads while the police were coming down.

I think the police came out in front of the Rainham End in the second half today as a result of what went on in the Factory at half time. Police were videoing people singing we want Scally out.

A couple of Police vans blocked the main road the level crossing is on to allow safe passage for Sunderland fans walking towards the station after the game. Spoke to a couple of their fans who said they left home at 5am to get to the game today!

Police numbers are decided based on intelligence and previous problems so there must have been one or the other.
I can't see the chief constable agreeing to throw out Scally haters 🙄
But doesn't a business have to right to excluded whoever they wish from their premises?

Is it against the law to sing Scally Out?

I know it might be once the PCSC Bill becomes an Act but that ain't happened yet.

Why are the police filming people singing Scally Out?!

Maybe the people singing the ScallyOut chants happen to also be troublemaker with intentions of breaking the law.

By way of example, I saw one of the ScallyOut crowd at Wycombe who had blood coming from his mouth... ...clearly been in some kind of fight.

A sign of things to come.
One only has to look at Melbourne to see where it can go.

Yes they do but unless there are offences being committed (and I don't believe a dislike of the chairman is an offence) they have no power to eject anyone. To remove someone just because the owner doesn't want them there would mean the officer is acting as a public citizen. They would have limited use of force power to do so and would leave them open to legal action should they use force in removing them.

I have no idea why they were filming them.

And then you go on with that long diatribe as if coming to your own conclusions. Whodathunkit.

C’mon Buddha. It was a bunch of people walk into a Gills bar and start singing anti Scally songs. What’s the likely outcome? Pretty much the same as if a bunch of Sunderland fans walked in there singing Sunderland songs.

If the police were there to stop trouble. Job done.

Over on Twitterbook it seems a lot of folk are moving firmly against the minority that are trying to cause disruption. A lot of posts and threads started trying to blame Scally for it all. And most replies seem to be of the “great! Get rid of the idiots” sort of variety rather than blaming him or the club. Dunno about the discussion forum tho. Sticking out of there.

And quite a few fans with kids seem really annoyed at the “Scally out” mob for trying to ruin a good day out. Although that’s probably what they are after.

I sit in the rainham end, and the Scally out crowd were gathered to my right. What really pissed me off is that they were only intent on signing Scally out and anyone who disagreed with them received a load of verbal, they came across quite aggressive and provocative and I guess this is why they were then thrown out, Support the team and not the regime apparently, but it appeared this lot came only for trouble because at no time did is see any support aimed at the team. When the police did eject one delightful young man thought it was okay to put to continually put his middle finger up to the crowd. I agree with a some of the criticism aimed at the chairman but I also think some need to look at the bigger picture, the football pyramid is awash with cash and for someone to come in and buy the club they would need to pump an awful lot of money into the club for us to compete at this league, and if that were to fail were would that take us?

We're both speculating, OSK. Neither of us were there. You might be right. But you might be wrong too. I don't claim to know about yesterday.

But I do have experience of the way FIT teams work and so I know that there is a good chance that those who were being filmed had committed no crimes or had any intention of committing any.

Stopping trouble is one thing. Intrusive filming of, and intelligence gathering on, people who have committed no crime is quite another.

Check my links.

Yes, we are both speculating Bud.

But I’m basing my speculations more on the comments of fans over on Twatter and f/b stating there was a “trouble causing” element to it all.

And personally, I very much doubt people were filmed and thrown out simply for singing.

Public filming is legitimate
Without that, extremist Anjam Chowrey would not have been convicted of incitement.

Well said.
