Match Thread - Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford FC - Carabao Cup

My bet is they'll outplay us possesion wise and style wise, the key will be if we can finish the few chances we'll get. They will play on the front foot and bring the game to us. They are resiliant and play attractive football, but they're also not easy to beat.
EX your last sentence thumbs up, but my reply to it is...they ain't played us yet Lol!

Bearing in mind we have Marine at the weekend, I think my line-up would be...

Lloris; Aurier, Toby, Dier, Reggie; Hojbjerg, Winks, Ndombele; Bergwijn, Kane, Son

I might do a recovery check on Toby and consider Sanchez.

As Jose has said, this is the biggest game of the season so far and we need to be at our strongest. We also need Bergwijn to get more of an understanding with Kane and Son, hopefully getting in the goals. I would keep those 3 and Ndombele intact and continue with the axis of Winks and Hojbjerg.

If we don't take them seriously from the off....They will beat us. No doubt in my mind any neutral will watch and assume they are the top team, pretty sure they will look slicker, move better, pass better and generally look the part. Touch wood Harry & Son are on form and that nobody gets complacent

My real concern now is that with players falling like flies, we are just one/two more injuries away from complete derailment. We have had fair few games (EL and Carabao) to appraise and develop other players, but not a single fringe player stood out for me. Vin comes close, but like Poch, Jose seems set on his fav 11.

A year when we may genuinely have a chance on every front, a year when after summer appeared to give us adequate depth, suddenly looks to be on a knife edge.

Hope my fears are unfounded. With all the luck with the kind comp draws and some results, the gods of 'year ending with 1' are looking down upon us!

Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford meet tonight for the first time in over two decades. The pair last competed in a League Cup match on 26 September 2000, with Spurs coming away 2-0 winners.
The competition was known as the Worthington Cup back then and this third round clash was less than convincing on the Premier League club’s part.
The team line ups were as follows:
Tottenham: Sullivan, Carr, Freund, Perry, Sherwood, Iversen, Rebrov, Leonhardsen, Thatcher, Ferdinand, Vega. Subs: Walker, Doherty, Dominguez, Clemence, Thelwell.
Brentford: Gottskalksson, Quinn, Marshall, Crowe, Ingimarsson, Evans, Rowlands, Mahon, Folan, Partridge, Pinamonte. Subs: P. Smith, Williams, Theobald, Dobson, Graham.
Oyvind Leonhardsen ended a goal drought stretching to five-and-a-half hours with the first on 52 minutes before Steffen Iversen sealed the win 10 minutes from time. However, it was otherwise an uninspired performance from the home side who were thankful that Scott Partridge failed to capitalise on Ramon Vega’s blunder moments before Leonhardsen’s goal.

Spurs boss George Graham had kept faith with the team that stuttered to a 0-0 draw with Manchester City on the previous Saturday. Iversen, Steffen Freund and Leonhardsen all tested goalkeeper Olafur Gottskalksson with long-range efforts as White Hart Lane hoped history was about to repeat itself, Spurs having beaten the Bees at the same stage in 1998 on the way to winning the trophy. On that occasion the aggregate score was 6-4.

After a good start, Spurs went off the boil.
It took until 30 minutes to create a notable chance, when Les Ferdinand slid home Steven Carr’s low right-wing cross, but the striker was adjudged offside. At the other end Brentford thought they had good claims for a penalty when Lorenzo Pinamonte went down under Chris Perry’s challenge. The claim was waved away and both teams went into the break level at 0-0.

Spurs were lucky not to give the lead away to Brentford when Vega completely miskicked as he tried to clear, five minutes into the second half, but Partridge failed to keep his composure in front of goal and blasted high and wide with only Sullivan to beat.

The goals did eventually come and Spurs fans could relax in the knowledge that they were safely through to the next round, albeit there was much need for improvement.

You know,I think I would rather be facing City or Utd tonight. Brentford will be right up for this, they have nothing to lose. I just hope we can match the enthusiasm and passion they will undoubtedly bring tonight. No fuckin around tonight lads, be ruthless and efficient and play them off the park. C.O.Y.S.

Nice one!

So, 20+ years on and some things never change whilst I welcome some others!

" kept faith with the team that stuttered to a 0-0 draw with Manchester City "
I'd welcome a stuttering draw with City any day!

"After a good start, Spurs went off the boil. "
Never!

"striker was adjudged offside. At the other end Brentford thought they had good claims for a penalty when Lorenzo Pinamonte went down under Chris Perry’s challenge. "
Where's VAR when you need it!

"lucky not to give the lead away to Brentford when Vega completely miskicked as he tried to clear "
BrainF@rts-R-Us!

"albeit there was much need for improvement "
The famous last words!

I didnt see Dele in the training photos or video. A list of players spotted in training in a news article also didnt mention Dele in a long list . Tanganga was there looking lively, also White and Clarke. Ndombele manages to look cumbersome and laboured even in training, I guess that's just his way. The spirit of the players seemed jovial enough despite recent rumours of discontent

Starting XI: Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lucas, Son, Kane.
Should be good enough to win comfortably.

Only difference I see from those "available" vs "in squad" is Gedson. Seem like Harvey White has got that bench place tonight.

Massive night for Moura. A chance to prove to Jose that he should be in ahead of Bergwijn. Not for me, but I can see why he would be chomping at the bit and a decent selection.

I'm fairly happy with the selection although still underwhelmed by the MF.
With Lo Celso and Lamela invariably injured, and Dele seemingly on his way out, our attacking MF is more often than not mediocre. Whether Jose would opt for another attacking midfielder at the expense of the extra defender, even if we had one, is questionable though.
