Fairplay, I just looked at the list of countries who have national service and it was a toss up between Norway or North Korea ?
I think your bang on the money, with any form of violence there are going to be people who like it too much. One of the teachers at our old school had a reputation as such and was hated whilst another disciplinarian would tell you how sorry he was about having to do what he did and really hoped that he would never see you back in his office and was well liked and respected by the majority of pupils. Other than the cane thing that had the most profound effect on me is when my history teacher made me copy loads of chapters out of a book For lack of homework in my best handwriting. Once I had finished it which literally took me six hours he promptly ripped it up in front of me and the rest of the class when I handed it in. Always did my history homework after that
