January transfer action and rumours

Wonder if Brannigan could be included in a swap + £ deal?

Blackpool defender Jordan Thorniley is enjoying life at Oxford United as Karl Robinson's side look to gain promotion from League One.

The left-sided central defender was well utilised by Neil Critchley in the back half of last season's promotion campaign and the U's hope he will make it back-to-back promotions from the division.

He has been an ever-present since his arrival at the Kassam Stadium, apart from his spell on the sidelines with covid.

Last campaign Thorniley filled in astutely as part of a back three that allowed the Seasiders to continue their march towards the playoff places and eventual victory at Wembley over Lincoln City following a semi-final win over his new club Oxford.

Oxford Mail reporter James Roberts thinks Thorniley has been a key addition: “A left-sided centre half was definitely needed at the time with Rob Atkinson leaving for Bristol City in the summer, leaving a big hole on that side of the defence so the move was regarded positively at Oxford.

“His versatility meant that when he signed, he fit a key piece of the jigsaw in terms of ‘musts’ to bring in during that window.

“He really did hit the ground running and he needed to because there was issues at the start of the season with defenders being on the sidelines for various reasons.

“It was actually pretty impressive how composed and calm he was, it’s hard enough joining a new club let alone when there is so much change going on around you, and he slotted in well whoever he was playing with.

“I remember speaking to him three weeks into his time at Oxford and said ‘that must have been a challenge to slot straight in, almost what is the secret behind looking so calm’ and he said ‘well to be honest I know what to do and it’s about showing everyone I can be composed and it extends to them’."

And it is not just those following the club for their profession that have been left impressed by his time at the club as his composure in the heart of the defence has left fans purring for more.

“There won’t be any Oxford fans who will say he’s not been a good addition, he’s solid whenever he’s been in and has posed a set piece threat as well," Roberts said.

“Crucially on the ball, the way Karl Robinson likes to ball he’s good on the ball, good coming forward and with diagonal passes.”

Given the impact he has made at his new side, there is hope from the club that there could be a future permanent deal on the cards.

“There’s definitely some hope at the club about a permanent deal," Roberts said.

“Karl Robinson has made some positive noises about it when asked and Oxford are probably helped with the fact Blackpool have a decent set of centre backs at the moment.

“The thing might be whether he wants to move his family down south, obviously all the clubs he’s played for have all been up north, but he’s clearly enjoying it here and he fits in well with the squad and the club."

“He’s been pretty much an ever-present apart from his spell out with covid and he’s almost tutoring younger players alongside him like Luke McNally who has come into the team," Roberts said.

“If Oxford are going to stay in and around the playoff places they need players like Jordan who have been there and done it.

“Him staying fit and staying at the club until the end of the season will be massive especially on that side of the defence where Oxford are a bit light.

Brannigan (permanent) and Simms (loan) is a perfect January window for me.

Add in a CB and an attacking midfielder/winger and we’d be promotion material.

Yes you are still living under the dark cloud of the Oyston's.:shake: Dale has not had enough time to make a full impact imho, most of us can see his talent. Remember for example, It took Keshi many a while to hit form and James is coming on fine too. Its a matter of time.
Lets look at it another way, what would you actually get for 1m ? After all we're not living in the Eighties any more.

"Blackpool are set to ask Crewe Alexandra to reduce their asking price for Owen Dale as they look to make his loan spell permanent in January. The reported fee for the winger would be £500,000. (LancsLive) "

In all seriousness, he hasn't been worth £500k so far and at this point i'd be disappointed if we paid it. He might well come good, but £500k is a big bet.

I have it on good authority that someone from Merseyside may be popping in around January......

Bob, I have it on good authority that Ken Dodd of Knotty Ash FC is unavailable and has popped his clogs. Diddy or Diddy not? :grinning:

Blackpool youngster Rob Apter is attracting interest from north of the border in January as the Seasiders look set to loan the midfielder out again.

According to LancsLive, Premiership outfit Livingston are keen on taking the 18-year-old Liverpool-born midfielder on a loan deal until the end of the season, just weeks after he penned a new professional deal with the Lancashire side.
Apter’s fresh contract has come off the back of an impressive stint at English seventh-tier side Bamber Bridge, where he has scored nine goals this season and his form in non-league saw him called up to Scotland’s under-19 squad for the first time recently – scoring on his debut against Gibraltar.

His Seasiders team-mate Ewan Bange has also been at Brig on loan and earned himself a move higher up the pyramid to National League North side AFC Telford, but Livingston would be a significant step up for Apter should a move go through.
Blackpool are set to send Apter to a higher level than Bamber Bridge when the January transfer window opens but no destination has been decided for the teenager just yet.
The Verdict
Blackpool fans have seen very little of Apter, having made just one league appearance at the end of last season but he did tee up a goal for Ellis Simms against Wigan Athletic.
However it’s a good sign that Apter is attracting attention from the top division in the country he’s chosen to play youth international football for.

Blackpool could be interested in bringing back Everton youngster Ellis Simms during the upcoming January transfer window.
Simms joined the Seasiders on loan last January, and played a vital role in Blackpool’s promotion from League One. The 20-year-old contributed 10 goals from 24 league appearances. But since returning to his parent club in summer, Simms has yet to gain any first-team action.
According to reports from The 72, Chief Executive of Blackpool FC Ben Mansford recently suggested that the door is open for a potential return of Simms.

Speaking to The Gazette, Mansford stated: “Ellis will hopefully always have a soft spot for Blackpool. We will always remember him fondly.
“It was tragic he wasn’t able to play in the play-off final given how hard he had worked to get us to the final.
Everton were really happy with how Ellis developed and how he enjoyed his time here. So if he becomes available, it’s right for us and it’s right for Ellis then we’ll keep you all posted.
“I’m sure he’s a player that will naturally be linked with us and you’re quite rightly going to ask about that because the fans want to know.”

With Simms currently being over-looked at Everton, a potential return to the Seaside club could now be on the cards.

I'm saying no more. I've given enough away already..

Wait and see.

And no, it's not Tom O'Connor either.

Would Everton say no to a big bid from Blackburn if Brereton went to Southampton/Palace? Be a decent replacement.

Big big week coming up. We were told 2 players tested positive. Which 2? No Dale, Wintel, Connelly, CJ or James today that's a lot more than 2.we deffo missed Wintel and the Viking struggled.

We should also be considering the likes of Stewart is he going to be able to string more than a game at a time?

Will St Simon want players off the books before further investment?

Wasn't CJ on the bench?

Apologies but he has been around the squad now for a few games and if he were truly fit he should be one of the first names on the sheet to start. You see my point though re the thread? Prem is right we struggle closing a game out by defending better playing our natural game in the main with an air of caution ie not gung ho.

Forrest and Baadiff sniffing round Bowler.

He's only got a contract till the end of the season hasn't he?

I'm in two minds about him, he's clearly got talent and an impact to change a game. Is he consistent and hard working enough to play in our team/system? Not as sure.

If we can get reasonable money for him, sure. But he would need replacing immediately.
