I'm looking forward to league two...

These words, 'I'm looking forward to league two', were uttered to me. Am I looking forward to league two? In all honesty I cannot say I am but will more if we are not a laughing stock.

Lets face it Pompey are, and have been for the majority of this season, getting relegated once more.

A place in league two, at best, is where we are headed at the end of this season – no not 'defeatist' or 'negative' just a realist...

That, in itself, does not 'worry me' too much, I can deal with us playing in the basement level of the football league as our fall from grace in the football league pyramid is complete but I cannot hand on heart say I am 'looking forward to it'.

I say this as a friend of mine text 'I'm looking forward to league 2 mate' with them hoping (if The PST gets control) 'the trust can do a deal on season tickets like Bradford' – what that deal is I do not know, but would hope a good deal can be done nevertheless!

Relegation to the championship from the premier league saw me say I 'welcomed this' and 'looked forward' to it. I truly hate the premier league and all it stands for, so genuinely was not disappointed to drop from that level although the championship was not the 'real football' I was longing for.

Sadly the championship is following in the trend, on a smaller and watered down scale though, of the premier league. Now, league one was where it was really at and I was looking forward to that...

Has this proven to be the case?

In all honesty no – that said the continued off the field bollocks does little to inspire me with much these days and my interest levels are diminishing all the time, not that my love for Portsmouth Football Club is any less mind!

I will look forward to the football, whatever level once the off-the-field problems are resolved – and pray that once and for all they can be – but all the while that remains, as it has for years and no degree of certainty can be placed on our long-term future it is hard to 'enjoy' or 'look forward' too much.

As it stands, if I am honest, my away travels will continue to be few and far between. I do not mind the defeats, not that I like them, but the manor of so many of them this season left a sour taste in my mouth and left me begrudging the time, effort and money I had put into going. I am beginning to enjoy things again, seeing players give their all and play like they want to be here but I do not want to endure another season where the squad, forgetting the side, is being chopped and changed all the time!

I just want a 'proper club' again, run by proper people in proper ways and no more of those bloody ridiculous deals like the one with Kappa that has seen the club collect something like 2% of the money from merchandise sold! 'I will buy a shirt as it puts money back into the club', yeah right, that £30 quid or whatever it was, crap football or crap players not giving a flying one or not, would have been better spent on matchday tickets as it turns out, but I digress...

So no, 'looking forward to league two' is not something I can say that I am, but I sure as hell will enjoy this a hell of a lot more if we can get things sorted out, start seeing us fans treated as such and not mugged off and see us able to put together a proper side that can be competitive and will be competitive with those pulling on the famous blue shirt giving it their all as those we currently have – although I would suggest it will be all change again this summer – are starting to do now that it seems the remaining mercenary hangers on have slung their hook!

Yep, I know some might say 'just having a club' should be something to be thankful of, and yes they would be right but what we have now is ONLY Portsmouth Football Club in name and as much as it would pain me not to have it any more I think I would almost not have one that have to endure another season of misery (again not results wise) like we have for so many years.

We have been a shambolic mess for years, we are a laughing stock – as someone said in the forum back along 'doing a Portsmouth' has become an expression, and it is not one I like to hear.

Please, please let this end and whilst I will not 'look forward' to league two I will, all being well, be able to actually enjoy it...

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Last time we were in the 'basement level, Rug we had the likes of:

Joe Laidlaw
Steve Bryant
Alan Rogers
Terry Brisley
Peter Ellis
Jeff Hemmerman
Peter Mellor
Steve Aizlewood
Steve Davey
John McLaughlin
Keith Viney
Alan Knight
Leigh Barnard

in the squad. Good days, I hope we can find their modern equivalents :7:

Don't forget the last time we were in the bottom div Jimmy Dickinson was also the manager so his statue will be a poignant reminder. Not sure the club was run any better in those days either as they had financial problems back then as I recall.

I liked your post Rug but I'll be honest I would have the Premier League days back again in a flash. Less than 3 years ago we were in the FA Cup final and a worldwide brand. Today we have sunk like a stone quicker than any other club in recent history and it has impacted badly on the club's image and ripped the heart and soul out of the fans. If we had focused on the super new stadium when we were on our uppers churning over good money in the PL we may have had a different ending to the story than CSI.

Finally, we have had to rely on the fans for a buyout as a last resort and that is not ultimately what the majority want if we are honest because the likelihood is we will be in the doldrums for many years to come. I hope I'm wrong and there is a grand plan in the manner of Swansea's meteoric rise. Unfortunately that was backed by a new stadium which I think has helped every inch of the way.

If we are in league 2 next season, the most positive thing will be that we survived, but I cant honestly say I am looking forward to it. I will still be going but must admit that the League that I probably enjoyed most was the Championship, loads of good players, but much less hype than in the Prem. :18:

I'm kind of looking forward too it as it means I'll be able to go to far more away games this season being now based in Devon. Potentially there will be games against Torquay, Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol! I should be able to make all of those!

Anyone who says they are looking forward to it is either delusional, deranged or needs to be sectioned! Likewise anyone who says they prefer this shite to the Premiership is a liar or doesn't know what football is! The best players playing the best football week in week out over this pathetic crap anyday please!
And every single solitary person on here at the time loved it! So please don't give me this cods about this is real football!!! It's shite shite and treble shite! We can all say this is where real football lives and these are real football players, fans and games, but all you're doing is lying to yourselves to make yourselves feel better about the crap position we are rightly in! I questioned it years ago on here constantly about the money and was told to shut up and enjoy it! Well we now have to take our medicine with shovels and tough titty on us! And mark my words, with the trust taking over dont expect this nightmare to end anytime soon, no matter what the rose tinted specs brigade will ram down your throat!.....rant over! It's been a crap day!!!!

Sorry Penton don't agree, been going to FP since early 70's and saw all the home games in the Prem, yes enjoyed it but come the end it was all too predictable and I watched alot of poor games then as well.

Matchday has been more about meeting friends and drinking for many a year.

Yes the football is poor, only been impressed with the passing ability of Notts County, and I am amazed how so many average players make a career in the lower divisions.

League 2 will be cheap season tickets, little police, and poor footie but i am still looking forward to it. I would like to see our younger players making it and being transferred to better clubs for a decent fee and not a fire sale bargain, giving income to the club.

Re PST I have always said that its only the best of a bad choice, hence i have kept my money in my overdraft, and yes i suspect they will be rattling the tin within a couple of years unless we get into bed with someone else.

Division 4(League 2) will not be like last time the whole of football has moved on, but they will still wear blue shirts and win, lose, or draw bring it on.

A good outlook JSwig particularly the kernal that it will be good merely to survive and play a brand of football that only our resources will permit. Have to admit there's no substitute for good football whatever league you are in. Swindon were exciting at times and Bradford did extremely well to get to the League Cup final but in the end they were outclassed by the Premier League standard. I genuinely hope we can one day get back there and have the better players parading at our club again. I can't recall laughing at the poor football as much as I have at the last few home games.

Being a fan of Pompey has always been more than watching a match to me. Its been part of my make-up since a little lad. When I was living in London with all the big teams on my doorstep, I used to go and watch them, but never felt a part of them. When I had the means and the dosh to get down to Fratton Park, I immediately felt at home... and we 'were' in the lower divisions then.

Of course I loved our time in the Prem, no doubt about it, but league 2 holds no fears for me. Been there before. Am I looking forward to it.... what choice have we? Just got to man up and get on with it, no point in moaning.

What's more important is that the club stabilises and finds a bottom. If its still being ripped apart, the same old shenanigans are continuing, then it doesn't matter what league we are playing in, the downward spiral continues. We need to touch bottom and establish a base to build on.

When you are at the bottom of the pile, there's only one direction we should be looking in... and that's up. Looking up at the stars is always better than looking down at the gutter. Its all about anticipation. Like a lot of things in life, its your attitude to your situation that determines how you feel. Some of the best times I've had while supporting Pompey were when we were fighting for promotion or pulling off the 'great escape'. I found those times exhilarating, more so in fact than winning the FA Cup. That's just my personal stuff though, its not the same for everybody.

Anyway, that's enough of my rambling. Am I looking forward to league 2 ??? If we are in L2 next season it will mean the club has survived, that will do me. Time to start looking to the stars again...

Ramble on Corny. One of my best matches ever was the trip to Liverpool when we down there. I don't think it is a moan as such as the mood and attitude is generally good towards the community takeover. I think it is merely a reality check and reflection of how quickly we have plummeted to League Two, and being resigned to the alternative shape of the future which is less than glossy shall we say. I'm certainly in favour of the Trust and hope the football gets better. Its the football wot counts mate.

As usual, Corny says it the way I see it.

Crewe on Saturday was as good as any away day in the premier for me, I really don't care if we make it back to the premier league in the near future or not. If we do, fine as long as we are competitive and financially ok.

Of course, there is still the matter of PFCs survival to consider. I just hope it is finally sorted at this next court case, with no more delays. :17:

Am I looking forward to League 2 vs League 1? I don't think that's the real question. For me its a choice between a stable & an unstable club.

League 2 football will be awful. Let's be clear. Passing will be terrible. Pitches will be awful. Players will have little / no control of the football.

However, I doubt there will be much difference between L1 & L2. The gap between the Prem & the Championship is massive. I doubt we'll notice much difference next year.

For me, its about being able to focus on football & not on ownership & administration, etc. etc.

One good thing about L2 is that there is a whole lot of "up" to look forward to, and (hopefully) not too much more "down".
