Global Warming The End is Nigh ?

Vital Football Legend
Scientists predict a 3 degree increase in temperatures by the end of this century.

The ramifications are very worrying. Rain forests could dry up and catch fire. Oxygen levels could drop , making breathing difficult, sea levels will rise, major areas of the planet could become uninhabitable, migration of populations to lesser affected areas could be huge. Food could be scarce, and there is lots more .

This 3 degree increase some say will happen despite planned measures to prevent it. It could revert the planet back 3 million years when conditions are thought to be similar to what is being predicted.

If the above has any chance of happening what can we do and will it halt the increase or slow it ?

What's the point in developing technology and increasing populations . We would need a significantly smaller population and somehow produce more oxygen from the land that's left.

If it happened and people knew they were going to die, can you imagine the lawlessness around the globe ?

I drink for the taste and refreshment these days. My hangovers were pretty severe so I learnt not to go too far, the pay off was too ùnpleasant.

Anyway what about the fecking thread. If it's true, we may as well all go on a bender until it happens. No future.....No point.

Personally I think global warming is part of a longer term trend.

However, there isn't any doubt that we are destroying the planet's livability with pollution and population growth.

Humans are greedy. Nothing will be done until it's too late.

Some say the methane from cows arses are the biggest problem. lol Nothing to do with the billion cars on the road, or the fuel and oils being used hey.

I heard on radio 4 ( worth a listen ) that the methane from cows comes from burps !!

Thing is....why so many cows. Do we need the beef and milk as part of our diet or in such quantity ? Same for Lamb.

Farmers produce 10% of harmful gases. Very little is being done to reduce it. Traditional methods are set in stone for many farmers. One in Hertfordshire grows only arable produce but does not plough the soil. Known as zero till , the plants or seeds are drilled into the soil in plugs. This leaves the soil undisturbed allowing worms etc to tunnel and improve drainage and water retention deep into the soil.

Modern techniques are being tested but traditional farmers don't like change. One farmer was asked if he covered his manure to prevent gas.....no, do you have timers on your yard lights.....no, they are on all the time, do you have wind turbines....no and so on. I havnt got a downer in farmers unless they get in my way on the road, but everyone needs to get on board with this.

I was in London today and had to pay the congestion charge. I saw an advert for the new all electric mini, zero charge. It's still causing congestion whether it's fuel or not. So change the charge name to emission not congestion !!

Trump Administration Issues Report That Climate Change Is Real

What the U.S. Departure Means for the Paris Agreement

The Trump Administration allowed the release of a sweeping federal climate report that began under President Barack Obama and concludes that the Earth is warming at an alarming rate due to human activity.

The study found the Earth is undergoing its warmest period “in the history of modern civilization,” fueled primarily by rising levels of carbon dioxide. It was released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, which is mandated by Congress to report every four years on the state of climate change.

The conclusions about melting glaciers, diminishing snow cover, ocean acidification and other results of a warming planet are hardly new.

The central premise, that humans are to blame, contradicts previous statements of President Donald Trump and many high-ranking members of his administration, who have questioned the scientific findings regarding climate change.

The Environmental Protection Agency had no immediate comment.

Time to give up meat and diary.....

No need to rear meat anyway soon..

'No longer kill animals': Bill Gates, Richard Branson back 'clean meat' start-up

Shruti Date Singh

The world's richest man, Bill Gates, and fellow billionaire Richard Branson have joined other business giants investing in a nascent technology to make meat from self-producing animal cells.

The Silicon Valley start-up they back hopes to tap rising consumer demand for protein that's less reliant on feed, land and water.

Memphis Meats produces beef, chicken and duck directly from animal cells in the lab, without raising and slaughtering livestock or poultry. The company has just raised $US17 million ($21.5 million) from investors including Gates, Branson and Cargill, one of the world's largest agricultural companies, according to a statement this week on the San Francisco-based start-up's website.

"I'm thrilled to have invested in Memphis Meats," Virgin Group boss Branson said in an email in response to questions from Bloomberg News.

"I believe that in 30 years or so we will no longer need to kill any animals and that all meat will either be clean or plant-based, taste the same and also be much healthier for everyone."

Cargill's move to pour funds into the small company is the latest move by an agricultural giant to respond to consumers, especially millennials, who are rapidly leaving their mark on the food world through surging demand for organic products, increasing focus on food that's considered sustainable and greater attention on animal treatment.

Big poultry and livestock processors have started to take up alternatives to traditional meat.

'Problems that everyone wants to solve'

"The world loves to eat meat, and it is core to many of our cultures and traditions," Uma Valeti, co-founder and chief executive officer of Memphis Meats, said in the statement.

One of the start-up's meatballs, made from lab-grown beef.

"The way conventional meat is produced today creates challenges for the environment, animal welfare and human health. These are problems that everyone wants to solve."

To date, Memphis Meats has raised $US22 million, signalling a commitment to the "clean-meat movement", the company said. The latest fundraising round was led by venture-capital firm DFJ, which has previously backed several social-minded retail start-ups.

The world's richest man, Bill Gates, is throwing his weight behind "clean meat" production.

Cargill has "taken an equity position in Memphis Meats' first series of funding," Sonya Roberts, the president of growth ventures at Cargill Protein, said in an email, without disclosing the investment amount.

"Our equity position with Memphis Meats gives Cargill entry into the cultured protein market and allows us to work together to further innovate and commercialise," Roberts said.

"We believe that consumers will continue to crave meat, and we aim to bring it to the table, as sustainably and cost-effectively as we can.

"Cultured meats and conventionally produced meats will both play a role in meeting that demand."

The investment is just the most recent by traditional meat companies.

Tyson Foods, the largest US meat producer, has created a venture capital fund focused on investing in companies "to sustainably feed" the world's growing population.

In December, it announced a stake in plant-based protein producer Beyond Meat, which also counts Gates among its early funders.

The more people on the planet the more food is required, more houses, more tarmac less green space, less oxygen. We need to limit birth numbers and plant more trees.

Obviously that's simplistic and there are many things to be done. If the temperature increase is irreversible the population decrease will happen anyway but to what extent will it decrease......to extinction ?

I must admit I can go without meat. I quite like the veggie options these days. I do like a home made burger though!

Agree NRD people should be capped to two children. With people living longer, more and more country side getting eating up by new housing something has to be done. This won't happen though because nobody would have the balls to implement the limit. Didn't China do something similar?

China rewarded everyone with a radio if they had 1 kid or I might be dreaming it.

It would make sense to have a sustainability target per Country. Small area with low oxygen production and food means small population and so on. Ours might be say 40 million and we could target that figure by limiting births and immigration.
