Brennan Johnson - Player Thread

For those who didn't attack him on his social media, and supported him whilst he settled in...BJ says thankyou!

Brennan Johnson feels our fans have played a key role in him finding his groove in Lilywhite.

A deadline day arrival from boyhood club Nottingham Forest in September, Brennan had endured something of a slow start to his Spurs career by his standards with just one goal in his first 17 appearances for the Club.

However, over the last few weeks, things have certainly started to click for the Welshman in north London with three goals coming in his last six games, while he has also ticked over into double figures for goal contributions this term - the latest of which came in Sunday's 4-0 win over Aston Villa with the forward crashing home our second of the afternoon.

Scoring such a goal in such an important game for us clearly meant a lot to Brennan, as highlighted in his post-match chat with SPURSPLAY, but what was more pertinent to the forward was to put on record his thanks to our supporters who stuck by him from day one and have continued to be in his corner as he has found his feet in N17.

I’m buzzing for all the fans who stuck with me and always gave me so much confidence - a big thank you to them.

Reflecting on the win at Villa Park, Brennan said: "There was a lot of build up to the game and big it was in terms of teams fighting for the same thing but, for us, it was just about performing and trying to stick to what we do, because when we play like that, we feel like we can beat anyone.

"I felt like that was deserved, our pressure was unbelievable, especially for that second goal, nicking the ball and once we do that we get into really good positions because we always want to press, but we press with the intent to score. To do that today was really good and the guys at the back, playing a high line, nicking the ball, it just gives us the goals."

On his personal recent goalscoring form, our number 22 continued: "It's still not as many as I want, but to score in a game like that, especially at the time I scored, I’m buzzing, especially for all the fans who stuck with me and always gave me so much confidence, a big thank you to them."

And now, after that statement win in the West Midlands, Brennan admits there is a buzz about the squad and, as we quickly edge towards the final running, the group can't wait to get back on the pitch again with a trip to Fulham up next (Saturday 16 March - kick-off 5.30pm UK).

"We’re all really excited, especially when we play like this," he beamed. "But we know, at the same time, we have a tough away fixture next week at a place where (Fulham) can perform and they’ve put teams away, so we’ll take every positive we can from this game and try to build again."

BJ is fine. Social media is what it is, he is young and is learning that the hard way. It won't go away, hopefully he has learned to filter out the bullshit and focus on what is important. I would say, just do away with social media, but we all know that isn't happening.

I wish him the best, glad he didn't give up and let it ruin him.

Said this before, but our strength is the collective of attacking players we have:

Seniors: Madds, Richi, Sonny, BJ, Kulu, Werner, Solomon, Gio, Gil
U21s: Veliz, Scarlett, Devine, Donley etc

You'd struggle to have more bodies in a squad than what we've got.

I would say that Madds and Johnson look the safest. That's a huge compliment to Johnson to be in that company.

I like the look of Johnson but have my reservations about whether he’ll make it big big. He certainly has some moments and if Ange has anything to do with it, he could go big. He certainly has flair. Yes he needs to sharpen up his attacking shots but he get his chances and he’s not afraid to have a go. I think at this point I’d give him my vote . Go for it Brennan lad. Keep pushing the envelope.

BJ is one for the future, his quietly learning and going about his business, in him I believe and he will get there.

Go about your job BJ, learning etc and fcuk all the knobs on Social media.

He was played as the main striker in the middle again by Wales last night, he did score but he contributes less the game there, I guess they did it to accommodate James and Brooks out wide.

I dont get the hate for him either. Hes a young lad who shows every game. He took a hell of a knock which has scarred him for life on his head. He produces on a regular basis and he shows development. With a striker who has any chance of getting on the end of his balls into the box his productivity will increase 10 fold too. I got sick of seeing his balls fly across the box begging to be scored. He showed the way it was done too by scoring at the back post coming on to Werners crosses. He missed a few too.

For debutant season i can think of loads of players who have produced much much less. He is settling in niceley

All the smart money is on that he'll kick on this season.

Four of his five league goals last season were from him getting on the end of a wide cross and converting the chance with one touch with his instep. The fifth was not too dissimilar: converting a through ball from Son first time with his instep.

So he clearly has good footballing instincts: the anticipation of the move; the timing and positioning of the run; and the technique to finish.

Strangely though, his finishing - or shooting - from all other types of goalscoring opportunities were poor overall. Often he showed very poor technique and a complete lack of composure.

So he's a WIP but he has plenty of other assets to his game as well and his assists total last season would have been off the charts if we had had other forwards to convert the chances he created.

I would like to see him toughen up this season. I thought he was bullied out of games too often last year and the PL is very unforgiving in that respect, particularly with the type of refereeing we now have.

He was anonymous for large parts of the games last season. He must adapt and learn to keep possession in key areas. His work rate was questionable at times as well.

He is a good player, but he looks better on the counter. He has a lot to learn.

He's doing just fine.

It was a big step up for him last season & i thought he did farely well for large parts of the season. Obviously being so young he'll blow hot & cold as they're want to do but the signs were good. I feel he should kick on.

Madds went missing last season & when he did our front line began to falter. Without the proper service it's fair to say not only him but all 3 suffered with poor form.

For me he went from being a "Big Fish in a Small Pond" to a Small Fish in a Big Pond" thus a certain amount of "Rabbit in Headlamps"

He will come good this season, mark my words on that! having had a season as a Spurs player. COYS

Similarly to Dele, the goals and assists cover the short comings that he needs to develop on. While you are scoring and assisting all is well, but once they dry up you need to have the all round game involvement to fall back on. That's the area that needs to step up in.

I said when we signed him I think we have massively overpaid for an average winger with not much end product. I have not changed my mind.
