A-Z Of Tennis

S - Thought about Steffi and Serena but decided on a double - STAN SMITH. American who probably had most success as a doubles player but won singles titles at US Open in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972. In the latter he beat my then favourite player, Ille Nastase, in 5 sets.

T Christine TRUMAN (now Janes) - British tennis player who won the French Women's Singles in 1959, and Women's Doubles in Australia in 1960. She never won a title at Wimbledon, although she reached the Women's Singles final in 1961. No relation to Fred.

W WHITE LINES - they mark the boundaries and zones of a tennis court. In the modern Grand Slam tournaments they are monitored, in relation to where the ball lands, with the aid of the "Hawkeye" computer system, which was first officially used in the US Open in 2006. Before that it was just the decision of the line judges, and ultimately, the umpire. (See previous entry for "U").

There was a 1982 novelty Wimbledon UK hit single "Chalkdust - the Umpire strikes back" by "The Brat" (Comedians Roger Kitter and Kaplan Kaye) . The song was loosely based on the antics of US tennis star John McEnroe, in relation to disputed line calls pre-"Hawkeye" technology. (Clip on YouTube).

X - Xavier Malisse, Belgian former professional tennis player. Born in the north-western Flemish city of Kortrijk and nicknamed X-Man, he is one of only two Belgian men to have been ranked in the top 20 of the ATP Tour, with a career-high singles ranking of world No. 19. Made Wimbledon semi-final in 2002 and has won doubles title at French Open.

That's who I was thinking of for "X" too....
