It's that time of year again when Wimbledon starts - and usually so does the rain.

I confess to not knowing much about modern tennis - but let's give it a go!

As usual as long as it's something or someone (first or surnames) to do with tennis it will be good!

A Carlos ALCARAZ - Spanish player, born in Mercia (might see the Millers when they go!) and beat both beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in successive days and in 2022 was the youngest ever World Number One, winning the US Open.

C - Rosie CASALS. Important figure in women's tennis from the 1960s to the 1980s. Partnered Billie Jean King and won many doubles titles.

F - FRED Perry (1909 – 1995) was a British tennis and table tennis player and former world No. 1 who won 10 Majors including eight Grand Slam tournaments and two Pro Slams single titles, as well as six Major doubles titles. Perry won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships from 1934 to 1936 and was World Amateur number one tennis player during those three years. Prior to Andy Murray in 2013, Perry was the last British player to win the men's Wimbledon championship in 1936 and the last British player to win a men's singles Grand Slam title until Murray won the 2012 US Open.

I Ana IVANOVIC (now Schweinsteiger). Serbian tennis player who won the French Open Women's Singles in 2008. Reached semi-final at Wimbledon in 2007. Was ranked as the World's No. 1 in 2008. Married Bastian Schweinsteiger, the German international footballer.

J - JOHN Newcombe. When I was young Australia seemed to dominate tennis. Newcombe with his big moustache is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles. He also contributed to five Davis Cup titles for Australia during an age when the Davis Cup was deemed as significant as the majors. Tennis magazine rated him the 10th best male player of the period 1965–2005.

K KEN Rosewall - another Australian tennis player, whose career overlapped with Newcombe. He won all the major men's singles titles except Wimbledon (Finalist 1954, 1956, 1970, 1974). He also won all the major men's doubles titles several times.

Yes, Mike, in 1970 Rosewall lost a 5 set Wimbledon final to Newcombe. Watched it. Also saw him lose to Jimmy Connors in 1974.

L LET - another tennis term, this one occurs in one instance when a serve that hits the top of the net but is otherwise good, s called and let and is taken again.

M - MARTINA Navratilova is a Czech–born American former professional tennis player. Widely considered among the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, the most in the Open Era. Alongside Chris Evert, her greatest rival, Navratilova dominated women's tennis in the 1970s and 1980s.
Navratilova was ranked as the world No. 1 in singles for a total of 332 weeks (second only to Steffi Graf), and for a record 237 weeks in doubles, making her the only player in history to have held the top spot in both disciplines for over 200 weeks. She won 167 top-level singles titles and 177 doubles titles, both the Open Era records. She won a record six consecutive singles majors across 1983 and 1984 while simultaneously winning the Grand Slam in doubles.

N Ilie NASTASE - Romanian tennis player. Won the French and US Open Men's Singles titles, but never won that competition at Wimbledon (Finalist 1972 & 1976). Ranked World No. 1 in 1973-74. Also won several Grand Slam Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles, including at Wimbledon.
