2018 Summer Transfer Mega Thread

Graham isnt a necessity at the moment. Same with Dowell imo. Attacking mifielders/wingers we have sufficent numbers. What we really need is a LB and a CB. I dont want us to waste a loan on Graham when that could go on someone like Pennington who is far more of a necessity. As for LB, beginning to get to stage where we might as well use the McClean sell on fee to get Elder in on a permanent transfer. It isnt an ideal situation but we do need a body there and im sure Leicester will be keen to let him go on cheap just to shed him from the payroll.

Dowell loan i would be against as he would have appearance clause in contract and it would mean Powell's playing time getting marginalised. And we cannot afford to drop and asset like Powell imo over something like an appearance clause loan.

He’s a good player Graham but do we really need ANOTHER winger?
The number of players we’re linked with in the same positions suggests it’s agents touting thrm or journalists speculating to fill column inches.

One may come off. But at this stage they’re putting any name out there hoping one sticks. Usually the case we have weeks of speculation with a handful of names......then an ‘Exclusive’ the day before someone actually signs after being seen at the club.

He’s a good player Graham but do we really need ANOTHER winger? Take Colclough out of the equation and we still have Massey, Jacobs, McManaman, Walker, Powell, Roberts, Naismith. That’s seven attacking midfielders fighting for three spots. If Graham joins, I reckon we’ll sell Powell. That would be a catastrophic move.

I agree we are well over stocked in attacking midfield and should prioritise elsewhere but I'm not convinced 3 or 4 of the names we have are good enough. I will never turn down more pace and creativity as thats what wins us games. Same with Dowell but i agree if we only have 3 loans and no other funds we have to prioritise elsewhere and would need to ship a few out (but the questionable ones i cant see going tbh). Maybe the Graham rumour isnt true or Cook just thinks we haven't got what he will bring and wants him despite other areas being more urgent. Robinson as LB would be great and a CB but i dont fancy Pennington at all from what I've heard about him. But if he comes hope he proves his critics wrong with us.

As for taking kids on loan. Established players cost way more in fees and wages than we can afford and the big clubs stock pile all the top young talent. If you want good players and have little money the loan system is vital to keep you competitive by allowing you access to talent you maybe couldn't ever sign otherwise.

Best example is Huddersfield - signed 4 or 5 kids on loan that made up the spine of the side that got them promoted. If they turned up their nose at prem loans they wouldn't have gone up. We could sign top players much better than what we have or lads who aren't first team ready It's just about getting the right ones in the door. If they are good enough then I'm happy to have a team full of young Prem loans - we are not in a financial position to be picky about where we source quality from.

We MUST sign a LB. We are going into a league with much stronger teams cannot risk playing someone out of position there. If Burn is injured, then another CB is a MUST. Personally, I would take £5million for Powell as I think Walker would slip straight in his place and perform more consistently. Speaking with Walkers dad in Glasgow he mentioned that Jamie was frustrated at lack of game time last season and his agent has spoken with the club about this. I imagine the £5million would allow us to cover CB, LB for a fee and one other decent player on loan.

Getting shut of Reece James is becoming more perplexing every day as time ticks on to Saturday.
All pre-season wasted with an out of balance line up and playing trialists rather than our own players and everything starts for real on Saturday. There have been some poor pre-seasons and this fiasco is up with them all.

I really wouldn’t label this as a ‘fiasco’ - we have kept all of our main squad (minus Elder) and added some solid depth in a number of key areas with barely any money in the tries of transition. Couldn’t be handled any better IMO, not much anyone can do if there’s little cash at the moment.

Solid depth in key areas??? Support for Jacobs in Callum, back up for Byrne in James possibly. That's hardly solid depth Hud when we have used this valuable prep time without a left back.
In fiasco I mean the lack of game time for players, the left back situation and time wasted on trialists who were not wanted by their own clubs. Cash is nothing to do with any of that Hud.

Far too reasonable Will.

The whinging on here gives us all summat to do, but bloody hell, you should have a shufty on twitter........ Reading some of that guff, we're already down!

Oh I’m on Twitter haha but seriously what else do we need in the squad other than two defenders? Of course you need practice time together but it’s not that simple. Just about every team in the country will make two or more signings this week and they will not have practiced together either that’s just how it goes.

Takeover or no takeover, our way to survive at this level is to exploit the silly money being spent by premier league or championship clubs with parachute payments. To do that, we need to find a way to sign youngish lads and give them game time.

That's clearly not possible yet, but i'd hope when the takeover is done we look at lads like these Everton kids, Potts, and others who might have resell value in them.

Essentially every place in our team is an money generating opportunity. But if it contains 5 loan players that's a missed opportunity unless we can afford to be a loss maker.

We need a left back, additional cover at centre back and either a striker or bringing cole, lang or gelhardt into the fold. We also need to decide on Gibson.
Equally key, we need to get rid of anyone who doesn't want to be there.

All doable by saturday, and the only urgent thing is getting the left back in for training pre-match.

I’d love for you to go to Paul Cook and say that to his face. Four days to go before the season starts, three training sessions and we don’t have a single specialist left back in the squad.

I bet you particularly like James@wafcjames98. No rose tinted glasses for that lad!

With our limited funds available, and the lack of depth in the squad I’m surprised Cookie hasn’t looked to use any of his league of Ireland connections to bring players in. The likes of Graham Burke who went to Preston for 300k is an Irish international and I’d have him over Massey any day. Another one is Aaron McEneff who’s a midfielder for Derry. I heard he was on his way to Rotherham but haven’t heard much from that since. I’m surprised Cookie hasn’t shown more interest as he would give us versatility and a goal threat from midfield as well as more squad depth. Think I’d have someone like that over a Darron Gibson type. When it comes to Callum Elder, I’m not entirely convinced he’s cut out for the step up to the championship so would prefer that Robinson fella on loan. Would’ve liked to have seen Perch given a year deal because of his versatility across the back four and in midfield. Found it a strange one that he was let go but he must not of been cut out for it.

Preston have assembled a really good squad over the last couple of years made up of the best young LOI exports such as Sean Maguire and Alan Browne, young players released from the giant clubs like Josh Harrop and Ben Pearson and cheap lower league talent such as Barkhuizan from Morecambe, Billy Bodin and Ryan Ledson. They haven’t had a problem funding it as they’re all young players so don’t command high wages. They also sold Jordan Hugill for big money, reinvested smartly and now they have a number of huge big money assets. As a club very similar to them in budget and crowd size, we should be looking at following their blueprint over the next couple of years. Lopes could be the start of this, but he needs to be given gametime.
