Europa Conference League 2023/4

I

Every decision that's made seems to be for the benefit of the clubs already at the top. It's a closed party.
That's the idea and the reason that modern £ootball is fucking shite. Even the new rule changes concerning FFP and PSR or whatever bollocks they want to call it are being made after the big clubs have basically raped the system for years.
What they're saying is the top clubs have abused the loopholes, got to a point where they're way above everybody else who's not in the " elite " and now we're clamping down on it so no one else can gatecrash the party.
I wish they'd get their " super league " all fuck off and leave the rest of us to get on with what used to be a level playing field for all involved.
And breathe 😳

Given how our owners want to run the club I think its better these loopholes are closed because the likes Newcastle will exploit them. And some of these clubs will just run riot if they're allowed to continue anyway. United are a great lesson that throwing money at it won't fix all your problems.

I've made peace with the situation because we have what we need to lock in a place its just how long we can keep those pieces at the club i.e. Unai, Monchi, even Watkins. Its about how long you can mount and sustain the attack. Leicester couldn't keep it up.

When I look at Leicester there are lessons to be learned. You probably need 5 solid years of European football including back-to-back Champions Lge. campaigns early in the assault. You have to avoid your star players getting picked off and you need to have their replacements already in the squad. You are basically trying to stay one step ahead of the sharks and the vultures.

The blessing for us is we have Unai and I think we're less reliant on 2 or 3 players than Leicester were. IMO we have a much stronger foundation. I also think our style of football is more sustainable than Leciesters as well.

Ajax did a lap of honour after getting a draw off the mighty Aston Villa.

Although Ajax have a great European stadium, I think the pendulum of football has swung so firmly in the PL's favour that teams like Ajax feel outgunned by mid-table PL sides.
It's a great shame. When I was young, or even just 20 years ago, there was an excitement about European football [thus my user name], just as there was about supporting your local team. I think the majority of clubs need to use their voting power to level the playing field so that Celtic can recruit 11 players from their local area and win the European Cup - well that's clearly a fantasy but I'd settle for 30 clubs in with a chance of winning the Champions league, including Ajax & Benfica.

Actually the USA have a degree of 'socialised' sport so that their teams get to choose players in a draft. In Germany the fans have a degree of control and have just stopped the most recent big money wheeze - although they've failed to stop Bayern buying all their rivals best players over the last dozen years or more

It certainly has. We played Ajax in 2009 and even then they were getting continually raided for players. The team that played us had Huntelaar, Suarez, Vermaalen and Vertonghen in the line up. Within 18 months or less all were snapped up by Premier league sides or in Huntalaars case Real Madrid.

Ajax, or any other Dutch club for that matter, will never win the champions league again. Nor will any eastern European team, any Portuguese team, Greek, Belgian, Scandinavian. Nor will any German side that isn't Bayern, any French side that isn't PSG, any Spanish one that isn't Real Madrid or Barca.

Football at the top level has been narrowed to the point where you basically know who will be in the last 8 of the champions league every year. There's occasionally an outlier like Monaco a few years ago, Ajax not long ago etc but they will be brutally stripped of their players before long.

Every decision that's made seems to be for the benefit of the clubs already at the top. It's a closed party.
If you believe that then we may as well give up and walk away as your comment implies that Villa will never be able to reach the top either.

I don't think we'd be able to sustain it if we had a "Leicester" type season. The same thing would happen to us that happened to them, Monaco, Ajax etc within recent times.

I don't go to Villa Park every other week because I think we'll win the league one day though. I learnt during the god awful period between Mcleish joining and Smith coming in that even if results and the football on offer is god awful I'd still turn up to Villa Park every match day.

Thursday we need to utilise the squad and keep some fresh legs for Sunday .
----------- Martinez ----------
Cash Carlos Lenglet Moreno
---- Irogbunam - Tielemans-
Rogers --------------- Zaniolo
---- Diaby ----- Duran -------

For me

Martinez
Cash Carlos Lenglet Moreno
McGinn Tim
Diaby Tielmans Ramsey
Duran.

If Ramsey is not fit play Rogers or Zaniolo in his place. Watkins took a couple of big wacks today and he needs a break.

Revised team with McGinn back in.

----------- Martinez ----------
Cash Carlos Lenglet Moreno
---- Irogbunam - McGinn-
Rogers --------------- Zaniolo
---- Diaby ----- Duran -------

on the bench to include and hopefully minutes for KKH Kellyman

As our strongest side got battered by Spurs yesterday I'm not sure it currently is our best side.
If our squad can't win this one then it needs a serious look at.
Hopefully its no the same ref
