Aston Villa v Leicester City Match Thread - Sun 21 Feb @ 2.05pm - Sky

Alert Team
We go again :throw:

Leicester are in decent nick at the moment: currently third in the league and second in the form table with 4 wins and only on defeat in the last 7.

We don't have a great record against them in the league in recent seasons and lost this fixture 4-1 last season. But we did win at the King Power earlier in this campaign.

We're clearly much stronger defensively this season but as it has panned out, the first goal is crucial - concede first and we generally get beat, score first and we generally win.

So what do we all think?

It was a good game at the King Power, we played very well and were on top for a lot of it, can't say we didn't deserve the win.

Maybe it will take playing against a decent team to get us back playing well. Last chance saloon for Barkley if he starts, needs to put in a real performance.

I watched the Liverpool-Leicester game and I thought there were woeful despite winning. They couldn't string two passes together for most of the match and created very few opportunities so I'm more hopeful than a glance at the form table might suggest we should be.

Vardy's always a danger but our defenders should be able to cope. Maddison is a clever player and likes his long shots but Martinez is in top form so I'm not overly worried about that. I'd like Nakamba in for McGinn or Douglas who were both poor against Brighton just to ease the Maddison-Vardy link up worries.

Barnes vs. Elmohamady is the biggest worry, especially if Perreira plays left back again and they double up. It's a game for Trezeguet.

I think we should start with a solid defensive side and use Barkley and Traore as impact subs. Both were very poor against Brighton and neither deserve to start.

Martinez
Elmo Konsa Mings Targett
Douglas Nakamba
Trezeguet Sanson Grealish
Watkins

I just want to see a few things.
SANSOM get a full game.
BARKLEY lets say rested.
LUIZ to stop giving ridiculously silly free kicks away in dangerous areas.

I am not overly looking forward to this one.

Luiz is never going to stop cynically fouling players he thinks are heading into a dangerous area. Its ingrained in South American football culture. He'd happily take a booking and a free kick if he thinks it stops a greater danger.

Very tricky game, Leicester seem to be coming back into form. Hopefully Brendan will go full strength for their Europa game on Thursday night and they will be knackered after a late flight back.
Personally I'd bench Barkley and see if it makes him play with more intensity when he gets on, not confident Deano will do it though

Not a massive massive problem vs an injury stricken Brighton. Against a team with multiple free kick specialists its a huge problem.
And Luiz should do as he is bloody told or coached by OUR management.
If of course he is being told that. Might not be given the instruction. Who knows.

Leicester will attack us and play a more open game than your Brighton and Burnleys of this world which I think will suit our game style much better.
Home win.

Give Jack a free role. At the moment opposition players are doubling up on him and are helped by pinning him to the touch line. We know they are going to play balls over the top for Vardy to run on to. Keep the back door shut. Above all lets have a bit more energy and and passing accuracy.

I agree with this and with @colavfc giving Sanson a full game, drop Barkley and McGinn. Start Trez with Bert or stick Ramsey out wide. I think if there is any hint of Grealish getting marked he should be allowed to drop deeper and therefore free space for others higher up the field.

I think you're giving him too much credit. I think he's just clumsy.

Difficult game vs a better Leicester side than we played earlier in the season.
The good news is that Smith knows we haven't been right for a few weeks (Burnley, Soton, Wet Spam, Brighton) and hopefully, as we've been consistent with in all fairness, we do see a reaction. Better performance. Happy with a point.

Admittedly nobody played well against Brighton, but I wouldn't single out Luiz (or McGinn) as they were outnumbered for the entire 90 minutes and chasing shadows. Hence why so many times they were caught wrong-side and having to foul people. Brighton played with 3 in the middle and Barkley did the sum total of f**l all to track or even attempt to take up space. With Barkley the way he has been, and Traore still not doing his defensive work properly it's like playing with 9 men when we don't have the ball....

Im not keen on McGinn in as one of the defensive 2. So for me in a 4-2-3-1
Its
Martinez
Elmo Konsa Mings Targett
Luiz Sanson
Trez McGinn Jack
Watkins
Trez is in for his better defensive play than Bert. We need.to be right at it against Leicester.
