We have conceded 10 goals in 8 games so far. More than I'd like but not too shabby. If the trend continues we could do very well this season. Out of interest how do the new rule changes help attackers ?[/QUOTE]
The below is Muttley's initial response Nick when I first opened this thread. I think that he made some valid points, particularly regarding the interpretation of hand ball, which strongly favours attackers. It does seem daft to watch defenders play with their hands and arms behind their backs. Conversely though we have seen numerous instances of goals being disallowed, where the offence has been so marginal that defenders have often seemed to get the benefit of the doubt. Possibly though this is more of a VAR than a rules issue.
I'd like to think however that managers and coaches are increasingly moving away from the Pulis and Hughton style of 'hold on to what we've got' football, and are perhaps recognising that their defences aren't good enough to take that risk. Increasingly more teams seem to be seeking to put the game to bed rather than hanging on to a slender lead, and that can only be a good thing.
'My theory is the rule changes and the new interpretation of the rules by the refs. They are all designed to create more goals. I think the crowd expectations is a good point as well.
So the true art of defending is dying in the game. You can't hold a perfect line across the back four for a free-kick. You can't step out as a defence for fear of someone running from an onside position. You definitely can't tackle even the slightest bit out of control.
I also think the transition to the modern full-backs and the move away from 4-4-2 has changed the game.'
