WHAT IS SOUL?

ST2

Vital Football Legend
That's a pretty big question but right now, here in 2013 the answer is unswervingly Charles Bradley

If you didn't catch Soul of America, the doc about him on BBC4 recently drag it up off iplayer or go to Youtube where there are dozens of live performances - having been 'discovered' at nearly 60 he's making up for lost time by gigging constantly.

here's a link for a run thru of his previous album. Backed and supported by the DApkings - the go-to artists for MArk Ronson and Amy Winehouse to achieve genuine soul. But check out any number of clips

Am getting really psyched up as I am off to see him on Sunday night at the Wardrobe in Leeds along with just about anybody I know and a sold out crowd. Great venue, low ceiling jazz club where I have seen dozens of great artists in the last 10 years. You can keep your stadium gigs and your anodyne 'rock' stars. Give me the real thing

Breakestra. Ozymatli, Sharon Jones, Michael Franti, Brian Augur (a legend and a maniac), local funk/soul bands - all great nights and this should be one of the best.

A direct line from James Brown, Otis and the best

I have to say it always makes me smile when people talk of 'the real thing' and then go on to make sweeping generalisations writing off unspecified rock stars as 'anodyne'.

Just because I don't like it it is not 'real'.

The spirit of Howard Moon is alive and well.

Loved the clip BTW.

haha, sorry but I find being at any number of run of the mill rock gigs stultifyingly boring and wishing I was elsewhere.

I'm not suggesting all rock acts are like that, far from it, but by the 90s there were far too many of them. As I was working in the music industry back then and had to go to far too many gigs like that I prefer to go and see acts I genuinely want to see (on the few ocassions I still do go and see bands).

There's a difference between performing and putting on a show. Give me a show every time.

What is Soul is just a cheeky reference to This is Soul classic Atlantic/Stax compilation album from 1969

An album I had myself which could be argued was the best soul compilation of all time.

I just get a bit irked when people talk about 'real music' then write off a whole genre.

If I don't like something I tend to ignore it, accepting that others do.

That said I don't take the view all art is of similar value and it is valid to bring critisism to bear.

just checked and there are several tracks from last night up on Youtube including a great version of Heart of Gold (Neil Young).

Now that I did not see coming!

he used to lead a James Brown tribute band but tbh he came across more as Otis last night and you dont get much better than that
