It’s the final league match of the season, and a tough one, as we travel to already promoted Watford.
Last time we met them was on 2 Jan at the Liberty, and a brace from Lowe resulted in a 2-1 win to move us into second place in the table, two points clear of Bournemouth and Brentford and six points clear of Watford.
Steve Cooper after the match:
"I think it was the right result and the consequence of a brilliant performance. I thought we were by far the superior team. We gave up a bit of territory late on, but that happens when it's only a one-goal margin. The idea was to really commit to playing with the ball today. I felt that we could build out from the back, through their formation and find obvious spaces to play in. We showed great character and resilience after going 1-0 down against the run of play to not let it phase us and carry on as we were. The lads were brilliant today. They got the right rewards."
Watford lost 2-0 at Brentford last Saturday, head-coach Xisco Munoz had this to say after the match: "If we scored one of the opportunities we had then maybe we'd have the chance to get more out of the game, but the situation is we lost and we need to continue to work very hard until the last game.”
Watford at home are a different proposition, their last six games all wins, ten goals for, zero against, an excellent home record.
Let’s hope they’re already on the beach!
With the chance of finishing in fourth place and home advantage second leg in the play-offs, I expect Steve Cooper to put out a strong side and for Ayew to play some minutes.
As we saw from the Derby game some of our players seemed to be holding back, whether they were afraid of getting injured and missing the play-offs who knows, but the fringe players had their chance to impress and did not.
Anyway, being positive, the sign of a good side is to win when playing badly, and we did that.
