Interesting take on it
Aidy Boothroyd announced his England squad for under-21 European Championships this week and one man’s absence was something of a surprise.
Tottenham Hotspur youngster Kyle Walker-Peters was left out of the squad. Boothroyd has instead gone with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonjoe Kenny, Lloyd Kelly and Jay Dasilva to fill his full-back positions.
Walker-Peters is a regular in the England under-21 set-up and played in six of their ten qualifying games for the competition. So his absence is something of a surprise.
It might have to be a wake-up call for Walker-Peters about his future at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year-old has played just 10 times for Spurs this season. Now Everton’s Kenny has played just two more games for his club. But Wan-Bissaka, Kelly and Dasilva have all played over 30 times this campaign.
Walker-Peters is clearly a very talented player but he needs to be featuring on a regular basis in order to push on and become a regular.
That opportunity does not appear to be forthcoming after several seasons on the fringes. This summer, Walker-Peters needs to find a way out of Tottenham. Whether that is on loan or in a permanent deal remains to be seen, but this has to be the catalyst for change for the Spurs full-back.
