What a man!
I confess that in the 70s I thought he was a bit of a crank and remember sitting next to him in a smoking carriage on the Underground to Aldwych when he asked for a light for his pipe.
Our paths next crossed in a BBC Question Time we he and I ganged up, with a bit of support from Dimbleby, against the rest of the panel. He was a persistent heckler and much as I wanted to dislike him, it was then that I realised whatever we disagreed over, his principles were unquestionable. He was a man of peace, fairness and democracy, the last of which became self evident when we met up again and again.
We shared in campaigns over the EU and it was a great eye opener to be part of an event where he and Peter Shore shared a platform with Norman Tebbitt and Enoch Powell. It was incredible to see all 4 sharing the same opinions.
