I really liked Tomas Holy last season, but now I just can't see anything good about him.
At fault for all 3 goals last night. Hardly ever comes for the ball in the air or on the ground. If he does, he hesitates for too long and ends up messing it up and getting stuck in no mans land. Looks very nervous and low on confidence. Even Zakuani seems exasperated with him in every game. Doesn't seem to be able to hold on to anything either even when a shot has very little pace on it, it somehow bounces out of his hands.
A league 2 keeper at the very best. Think I may stop singing his name from the Rainham end from now on. Yes. It's that bad.

Could it be just that?

He’s been very highly thought of by most of the fans for a long time (albeit with some poor moments). Could be he’s lacking confidence after a couple of poor games.

Hopefully that can return. We need him playing well, not only for points, wins and for the confidence of our back 4, but also for future sales income.

Keep singing his name. It might help.

Could well be he is trying to hard.As against relaxing and enjoying his games he is possibly trying to make a difference knowing he is being watched almost certainly. The keeper coach change almost certainly has not helped. Not a time to give up on him .But possibly we could do with more competition if Hadler is not going to step up then maybe another keeper could be needed in January to keep Holy on his toes.

Oh, no. Developing the dreaded Stuart Nelson syndrome !

All keepers make mistakes but they need mental strength and to exude confidence to their team mates even when they do not feel it.

The hesitation was key at Oxford. Once he had decided to come, he should not have checked his stride at all. Even if he still did not get there and the penalty was more clear cut it would be better for us in the long term IMO.

Maybe the confidence thing is why he did not make the grade in the Czech Republic.

I think it's partly down to the coaching. He lost a very good goalkeeping coach in the summer in terms of Glen Johnson and he's been replaced by somebody who doesn't have a great reputation locally. The last time Chalmers-Stevens was a coach here, Nelson's form dipped and I can't help but feel that we're seeing the same here with Tomas.

His decision making has been a bit wayward recently but his shot stopping is excellent. He made some game saving stops last night but was indecisive for the first goal. Bit unfair to blame him for the other two as the fault lay more with defenders not doing their jobs. He's a young lad so thrives on confidence and it's important we don't get on his back. Have a feeling he may be very busy on Saturday v Luton.

Thought Holy could have done better with all three goals last night although he wasn't helped by the defending on the second and third goals.

His decision making has never been great, but his shot stopping and reaction saves are his strengths, it seems to be the simple stuff like catching crosses and shots from distance he sometimes struggles with. He's certainly not the keeper he was last season. Hopefully it's just confidence and it will soon return, although Saturday and last night won't help.

Always loved Holy, hopefully just a blip in confidence, not sure his fault for 3rd think there was 3 defenders round the guy who scored, although he nearly done a Nelson in second half remember Wigan defeat,
He did make an excellent save one on one, which probably kept us alive.
Hopefully crowd will get behind him Saturday he seems to thrive on that.

See, im not a gk coach or specialist, but I wasn't sure about the first goal being his fault. Id think his argument would be that he was in the perfect place to catch it until Zak quite poorly headed it out of his path, away from him, causing him to miss the catch. It was a poor header from zakuani getting very little on it but just enough to screw up his keeper's chances and to put it right into the path of the opposition.

The 3rd goal wasn't his fault at all imo either. Their forward should never have had that much time and space to bring a ball down do about 20 skills then shoot. That was the defenders fault. Just because he got a hand on it, it doesn't mean he should have done better. By then it was too close and too hard to get anything more than a hand on it. I'd not blame him for that.

Havnt seen the 2nd.

Massive credit to the Gills fans who went. Really pleased for them.

What shambolic "defence" from us. Each goal conceded seemed to be a team failure, particularly the first and third.

If you watch the first goal, Holy is very hesitant (again) and IMO Holy should have come and claimed the cross (and it looks like Byrne and Zak were saying the same in the footage). Even without Zaks slightest of touches, if as a goalkeeper if you let the ball travel that far and let it bounce in your 6 yard box you're asking for trouble and risking being criticised. He should be timing his jump to meet the ball when he is at his highest point when jumping. At 6ft 9 he should not be struggling on crosses tbh.

The second goal, I think if you're being harsh he should have held, but if he can't hold it is has to go way from goal or behind for a corner, not back into open play. Having said that our defences reactions were poor for all the goals.

For the third, our defending was Shite again, but that is the type of instinctive reaction save that Holy has been good at over his time here, almost the type you don't expect him to save but does.

To give him credit his one handed save from the one-on-one was a quality save.

He's not going to have a lot of confidence when the defence in front of him leaks goals. Ehmer especially is prone to mistakes. At times Holy must think he's in a coconut shy!!

Defending for the third is horrendous. Hard to attribute blame to any one player when it was so collectively poor.

To be honest, I thought the lacklustre defending for the third goal was down to tiredness (it was towards the end of extra time after all).

Not that it's an excuse, though.

Let's be honest- even Vince Bartram and 'Big Fat Jim' Jim Stannard were shit at crosses, and we revere them as legends!

I remember a Fulham fan once telling me about how they used to nickname him 'Dracula' ('awesome at stopping shots, shit at corners and crosses!').

Also, Jim Stannard had a rock-solid defence in front of him. At least Holy could be excused by having to pre-empt whatever catastrophic mishap is going to be perpetrated by our back four- Luke O'Neill really struggled last night, and there were one or two almost-fatal errors by Max Ehmer last night (despite scoring).

Don`t forget the fine saves Holy made as well.

Last night there did seem to be a communication problem in the defense on a number of occasions

We rode our luck and we won but there were to many mistakes all players

But excusing him because the defence are shit in front of him does not help, because for the majority of this season our midfield have been shit so you could argue that our defence have been shit because of the carnage in front of them so we can excuse them for being shit to.

Players need to start taking responsibility for their own individual performance being right/good, if they all do that collectively they'll be fine.

Think for whatever reason Holy is in a poor run of form and unfortunately when that happens as a goalkeeper it usually costs your team goals.

Ehmer in the opposition box was fantastic. The way he took his goal was like a seasoned striker. That cross for List’s header which was ruled out showed good athleticism.
His own disallowed goal after the ref had blown for the penalty was also a good finish.
But he isn’t a good defender as he switches off and is over casual at times.
O’Neill can take a great free kick and can also cross the ball well. But defensively he is poor and often targeted - see his challenge for goal 3. He was Southend’s 3rd choice right back before he came to Gills. I think perhaps right midfield would be a better position for him.
