The next penalty

Skoorb

Alert Team
City have been awarded 8 penalties so far this season - 5 in the league and 2 in the Champions League. 4 have been scored and 4 missed/saved. Agüero has been the main man for this task in the absence of Touré but his record mirrors that of the club overall with only a 50% success rate overall (including the one he took for Argentina). His saved effort against Everton yesterday was his second miss from the spot inside a week having failed to convert his spot kick for Argentina in midweek and compounded Kevin De Bruyne's inability to get the ball past Steklenberg on the cusp of halftime.

So the question is........stick or twist?

Should Agüero continue to be handed the responsibility for this job or is there anyone else that Pep ought to nominate? Would giving Agüero a 'rest' in fact erode his confidence or enable him to recover his penalty taking mojo? Who else has the coolness to slot the ball home from twelve yards (if they are on the pitch)?

I did think about putting his name down but bottled it. Now that Joe Hart fella......he takes a mean penalty ;-)

Agüero overall career penalty record

Taken 38
Successful 29
Misses 9

Not bad altogether but I guess the disconcerting thing is tht 4 of the 9 misses have occurred this season (Steaua Bucharest x 2, Paraguay, Everton)*

*the stats below do not seem to include the miss in the WC qualifier against Paraguay in midweek so I have amended the figures accordingly

It is impossible to say, you never know if they are going to be on the field or not. I wish it could be like in the states where they can sub a specialist player and then take him off again. I would buy Mario just to take penalties. lol.

Seriously though it is down to confidence and who wants to take it. I would give it to Kolarov, Nolito and F25 if playing and in that order.

Mario missed one this week !!

Perhaps it's the balls, or the grass , or the goals are smaller.

Or trying to be smart.

Good point Buzz. I like the idea of a specialist penalty taker being brought on. We wouldn't need Mario though - we have Yaya cooling his heals and he was pretty good at this job.

Tough call but I personally don't think Pep will take it away from Agüero. He'/ already backed him once - taking this job off him would not do his confidence a lot of good no matter how it was dressed up.

I think Iheanacho would relish the chance if on the pitch being young, confident and n unknown quantity. But if I was to opt for anyone in Agüero's absence I think I would give the ball to Silva - he took a decent spot kick for Spain recently.

Agüero's problem should he be presented with the chance agin is where does he try and place the ball........his last two went to the keeper'/ left and were saved. Does he go that side a third time or opt for the other side? #dilemma

I went for Mrs Miggins who lives on the corner of our street. She has my vote :044:

That can't be true seac, you must have dreamt it. lol, Super M one of the best pen takers since the Brazilian we had and I forget his name, before that Franny Lee.

I suspect Kev was just a bit rusty overall yesterday, and only took it because Kun wasn't on the pitch at the time. Personally I'd have given the first to Nacho, but would normally have expected Kev to score. I think Kun will remain as penalty taker, and will get back to slotting them away very soon. It depends who wants to take them though.

As far as Nacho and penalties is concerned, agreed, CZ. I was surprised when I heard the news De Bruyne had missed, I expected Nacho to be first choice, but the only evidence we have for him is Villa away in the Cup last season.

Anyway, De Bruyne took responsibility as a senior player probably should. However, I read elsewhere that he changed his mind during his run up.....not a good idea.

Trying to be smart is the winner in my book. :017:
